This document applies to knitwear that has antibacterial properties in whole or in part. This document is not applicable to knitwear for infants aged 36 months and below. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this document. GB/T 4856 Package of cotton goods and knitwear GB/T 5296.4 Instructions for use of products of consumer interest - Part 4: Textiles and apparel GB 18401 National general safety technical code for textile products GB 31701 Safety technical code for infants and children textile products 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 antibacterial knitwear knitwear that can inhibit the growth and reproduction of bacteria and fungi on the fabric and render them inactive 3.2 solubility of antibacterial agent antibacterial knitwear is classified into non‑leaching and leaching types, based on the maximum inhibition zone width of the antibacterial substances leached from antibacterial knitted products against three standard strains – Gram‑positive bacteria, Gram‑negative bacteria and fungi 4 Size or specifications Comply with the provisions of the related knitwear standards. 5 Requirements 5.1 Safety requirements 5.1.1 Antibacterial knitwear shall comply with GB 18401, and children’s antibacterial knitwear shall additionally comply with GB 31701. 5.1.2 The antibacterial substances used in antibacterial knitwear shall be supported by test reports from qualified institutions. The test items shall include, but are not limited to: (1) acute oral toxicity test; (2) irritation test (for products in contact with vaginal mucosa, a “vaginal mucosa irritation test” shall be performed; for products in contact with other mucous membranes, an “acute eye irritation test” shall be performed; for products in contact with skin only, a “repeated intact skin irritation test” shall be performed); (3) mutagenicity test (at least one gene mutation test and one chromosomal aberration test shall be included). The result of the acute oral toxicity test shall be “practically non‑toxic” or “low toxicity”; the vaginal mucosa irritation test result shall be “non‑irritating” or “very mildly irritating”; the acute eye irritation test and the repeated intact skin irritation test results shall be “non‑irritating” or “mildly irritating”; the mutagenicity test result shall be negative. The test concentration of the antibacterial substance shall not be less than the actual use concentration. 5.1.3 Antibacterial knitwear shall be supported by test reports from qualified institutions. The test items shall include, but are not limited to: (1) skin irritation test – “a single intact skin irritation test”; (2) skin allergy test. The result of a single intact skin irritation test shall be “non‑irritating”; the result of the skin allergy test shall be “no reaction” or “very mild”. Antibacterial knitwear using different antibacterial agents, or using the same antibacterial agent but with different processing methods, shall be tested separately. For antibacterial knitwear using the same antibacterial agent and the same processing method but with different concentrations of the antibacterial agent, the product with the highest concentration shall be tested. 5.1.4 The inhibition zone width of antibacterial knitwear shall also comply with the requirements of Table 1. 5.2 Anti-bacteria performance 5.2.1 The standard test strains include: Gram‑positive bacteria: Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538); Gram‑negative bacteria: Escherichia coli (8099 or ATCC 25922) or Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 4352); Fungus: Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). Note: Equivalent test strains obtained from culture collections that are members of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) may also be used. 5.2.2 Antibacterial knitwear is classified into five antibacterial grades – Grades A, AA, AAA, AAAA (4A) and AAAAA (5A), based on the number of washing cycles and antibacterial rate. The specific requirements are shown in Table 1.
