This Part is applicable to test and assessment of resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture like mattress, sofa, etc., and may apply the test and assessment for resistance to ignition of upholstered furniture unit by reference to. 2 Terms and Definitions For the purpose of this Part, the following terms and definitions apply. 2.1 Progressive smouldering Exothermic oxidation, not accompanied by flaming, that is self-propagating, i.e. independent of the ignition source. It may or may not be accompanied by incandescence. 2.2 Flaming Undergoing combustion in the gaseous phase with the emission of light. 2.3 Afterflame Persistent flaming on the specimen after removing the ignition source, under the specified test conditions. 2.4 Afterglow / smoldering Progressive smouldering of the specimen, under the specified test conditions, after removing the ignition source or the flaming terminating. 2.5 Ignition Progressive smouldering or flaming on the specimen, under the action of the ignition source. 2.6 Resistance to ignition Ability of the specimen not be easy to ignite under the action of the ignition source. 2.7 Mattress Upholstered bedding product with core material of elastic material or others, covered by textile or others. 2.8 Upholstered furniture unit Member or component made of elastic material or other upholstered filler material covered with materials like textile fabric, natural leather, artificial leather, etc. 2.9 Sofa Elastic seat with backrest, made of soft materials, wooden material or metal material. 3 Ignition Rules 3.1 Smoldering ignition For the purposes of this Part, all the following types of behaviour are considered to be smouldering ignitions: a) Any specimen that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue the test and requires active extinguishment; b) Any specimen that smoulders until it is essentially consumed within the test duration; c) Any specimen that smoulders to the extremities of the specimen, viz upper or lower margins, either side or to its full thickness, within the duration of the test; d) Any specimen that, on final examination, shows evidence of charring other than discoloration, for more than 100 mm in any direction apart from upwards from the nearest part of the original Position of the Source. 3.2 Flaming ignition For the purposes of this Part, all the following types of behaviour are considered to be flaming ignitions: a) Any specimen that displays escalating combustion behaviour so that it is unsafe to continue the test and requires active extinction; b) Any specimen that burns until it is essentially consumed within the test duration; c) Any specimen on which any flame front reaches the lower margin, either side or Passes through its full thickness within the duration of the test.
