1 General Provisions
1.0.1 This code is prepared with a view to making the design of museum buildings meet the basic requirements in such aspects as applicability, safety and hygiene.
1.0.2 This code is applicable to design of newly-built, extended and rebuilt museum buildings.
1.0.3 According to the collection and the classification of basic exhibits in museum, there are museum of history, museum of art, museum of science and technology and comprehensive museum.
1.0.4 According to the building scale, there are extra large-sized, large-sized, large-medium-sized, medium-sized and small-sized museums and the building scale classification shall be in accordance with those specified in Table 1.0.4.

1.0.5 The design of museum building shall comply with the following principles:
1 Based on intact process design, satisfying the museum function and its moderate adjustment requirements and adapting to the sustainable development requirements of museum;
2 Ensuring that the environment for use of museum by the public and workers complies with the current hygienic standards of the nation;
3 Ensuring the safety of users; meeting the requirements for use and safety of children, teenagers, the elderly, the disabled, supervisors of infants and young children, etc. and complying with the requirements of the current national standard Codes for Accessibility Design (GB 50763);
4 Protecting the safety of collections and exhibits from natural and artificial damages;
5 In accordance with local condition and in combination with local natural and cultural environment and development of economy and science & technology to meet the requirements of land-saving, energy-saving, water-saving, materials-saving and environmental protection;
6 Carrying out coordination design for exhibition, environment, decoration, identification, information management system and security protection engineering and the like during the whole construction process.
1.0.6 Museum building design shall meet not only the requirements stipulated in this code, but also those in the relevant current standards of the nation.
2 Terms
2.0.1 Museum building
The public building built for the purpose of meeting the function requirements of museum to collect, protect and exhibit the witness of human activities and natural environment to the public, carry out education, research and appreciation activities and serve the society, etc.
2.0.2 Museum of history
The museum exhibiting collections from historical perspective and providing solid evidence and literature information for important historical events in chronological order.
2.0.3 Museum of art
The museum mainly exhibiting the artistic and aesthetic value of collections.
2.0.4 Museum of science and technology
The museum exhibiting the natural world by classification, development or ecological method and exhibiting science findings from macroscopic or microscopic aspect.
2.0.5 Comprehensive museum
The museum exhibiting natural, historical and artistic collections comprehensively, which is usually regional geological museum.
2.0.6 Memorial museum
The museum set for memorializing certain historical event or figure, which belongs to the museum of history.
2.0.7 Art museum
The museum of art which collects, protects and exhibits art collections to the public for the purpose of education, research and appreciation.
2.0.8 Science and technology museum
The museum of science and technology which develops science popularization exhibition, science and technology training and the like for the purpose of improving public scientific quality.
2.0.9 Exhibition hall
Small-sized or topic museum.
2.0.10 Museum of nature history
The museum of science and technology which introduces the natural and human environment and exhibits the evolutionary process from classification, ecology and historical perspectives.
2.0.11 Museum of technology
The museum of science and technology which collects, preserves, exhibits and makes research on industrial, professional or special engineering technological achievements.
2.0.12 Process design
The museum construction outline and technical contents determined after such construction preliminary works as feasibility study, project assessment and preparation of architectural design assignment.
2.0.13 Collection
The generic term of cultural relics, specimens, artworks, science and technology exhibits, engineering technology products, audiovisual products, models and the like which have collection, exhibition, communication and research value and are warehoused or exhibited in museum.
2.0.14 Exhibits
The generic term of collections exhibiting to attendance and the supporting information, science and technology exhibits, interactive or audio-visual demonstration facilities, models, graph-text plate and the like of the collections.
2.0.15 Exhibition hall
The special room set for the purpose of exhibiting exhibits to attendance.
2.0.16 Fundamental display hall
The exhibition hall set for the purpose of exhibiting main collections and basic contents in museum.

3 Site Selection and General Layout
3.1 Site Selection
3.1.1 Museum building base shall be selected in accordance with the following requirements:
1 Complying with the requirements of urban planning and cultural facilities layout;
2 The natural conditions, neighborhood environment and cultural environment of the base shall be appropriate to the type and the functional characteristics in terms of collection, education and research of the museum;
3 The base area shall meet the functional requirements of museum, and should have proper development space;
4 The transportation shall be convenient and public ancillary facilities shall be comparatively perfect;
5 The site shall be dry, unblocked in drainage and well-ventilated;
6 The distance to inflammable and explosive places, noise source and pollution source shall meet the requirements of relevant current safety, hygienic and environmental protection standards of the nation.
3.1.2 Museum building base shall not be arranged at the following sections:
1 The section where sedimentation, earthquake, landslide or flood are easy to be evoked due to natural or man-made reasons;
2 The section where air or land has been or may be contaminated severely;
3 The place near the site or building which attracts rodents, insects or other harmful animals.
3.1.3 Museum buildings should be built independently. When museum buildings are built in combination with other types of buildings, they shall have an individual zone.
3.1.4 When museum buildings are newly-built, extended or rebuilt in historical building, protective building, historical site or near them, the relevant laws and specifications about administration of cultural relics and urban planning management shall be observed.
3.2 General Layout
3.2.1 The general layout of museum buildings shall comply with the following principles:
1 Being convenient for the usage of attendances and beneficial for operation management; and ensuring the safety of collections;
2 Outdoor places and building layout shall be arranged as a whole and zoned reasonably, clearly, without interference and convenient for contact;
3 Comprehensive planning is required and short-term construction and long-term development shall be combined.
3.2.2 The general layout design of museum buildings shall meet the following requirements:
1 The building density of newly-built museum buildings shall not exceed 40%.
2 The number of base entrance/exit shall be determined according to building scale and demand of use and the entrance/exit for attendances shall be arranged separately from the entrance/exit for collections and exhibits.
3 The people flow, traffic flow and goods flow shall be arranged reasonably; the transportation route and loading/unloading site of collections and exhibits shall be safe and concealed as well as free from the interference of attendance activities.
4 Entrance/exit square for attendances shall be arranged with raw space for the gathering and distribution of attendance; raw space area shall be determined through calculation by 1.2 times of the attendances evacuated from the building to the entrance/exit in peak hours and shall not be less than 0.4m2/per people.
5 As for extra large-sized hall and large-sized hall, the distance from main entrance for attendances to the urban road entrance/exit should not be less than 20m and facilities sheltering attendances from rain and sun shall be arranged at the main entrance square.
6 Raw space and road shall be left between buildings and adjacent bases according to fire protection and security requirements; the circular fire vehicle access should be arranged for the buildings at spaces for collection.
7 The buildings, building parts or auxiliary rooms insensitive to noise should be arranged at the side close to noise source.
3.2.3 The outdoor exhibition site of museum buildings shall meet the following requirements:
1 It shall be arranged with indoor public space and flow line organization as a whole;
2 It shall meet the requirements for the transportation, installation, exhibition, maintenance and replacement of exhibits;
3 Enquiry, toilet, rest veranda and other service facilities should be arranged in large-sized exhibition site.
3.2.4 The number of parking spaces set in museum buildings shall be determined through calculation according to the scale of total floorage and should not be less than those specified in Table 3.2.4:
