1 General Provisions
1.0.1 With the rapid economic development of China, increasing attention have been paid to culture and sports activities, particularly swimming which is the best exercise to keep healthy and suitable for all age levels. Therefore, construction of swimming pools (natatoriums) of various functions has gone into climax. However, practically speaking, the existing and in-service swimming pools (natatoriums) cannot meet people’s demand in terms of the functions of use, safety, hygiene, installations operation and management. In this case, this specification has taken requirements, e.g. advanced technology, hygienic and environmental protection, energy and water efficiency, construction operability, maintenance accessibility, economy and practicability, as the principles applicable to design.
Due consideration of local economic and technological realities is a principle to be followed in engineering. Allowing for the unbalanced development difference in economic strength, technical management level and consumption capacity, high level cannot be the only emphasis of design. Instead, adhering to people-oriented principle, a comprehensive consideration shall be taken in terms of investment, operating cost, social benefit and better environment.
1.0.2 Swimming pools (natatoriums) can be classified into various types by the usage and user, e.g. competition, training, education, entertainment and medical; leisure pools can be classified into wave pool, waterslide splashdown (entry pool), rapids lazy river, bubble pool and hydraulic spa pool; and they can also be classified by raw water quality, e.g. fresh water, hot spring and sea water. It is difficult to cover all the types in one specification. Therefore, this specification has defined the application scope.
Since presently there is no specification on the construction acceptance for water supply and drainage engineering of swimming pool in China, relevant contents have been added herein and the application scope been enlarged.
For medical, hot spring and sea water swimming pools, and free waters natatorium, they have special operation requirements on water quality, water temperature, chemicals addition and disinfectant. Indiscriminate application of this specification in design may result in change in water characteristics and miss the objective of these swimming pools. In this regard, the design of these types of swimming pool is excluded in the application scope hereof. In case of those types, the design shall comply with relevant professional specifications or process design requirements. Regarding the way to perform, it shall be noted by designers that for some specifications, the administrations of interest are preparing the initiation stage.
1.0.3 There are many types of swimming pools. For competition swimming pools, they can be classified by event, e.g. swimming, diving, water ballet and water polo, which have different requirements for the pool size, water depth and installations. Similarly, public swimming pools can be classified into those for adults, beginner, and children.
Entertainment swimming pools have even more types. For recreational swimming pools, they can be classified into wave pool, waterslide splashdown (entry pool), rapids lazy river, bubble pool, diving pool, adventure pool, counterflow pool and paddling pool. At the same time, they are still be provided with supporting recreation facilities which are various, recreational, interesting and thrilling as well as attractive waterscape installations, e.g. waterfall, fountain and cartoon sprinkling. For fitness pools, they can be classified into massage pool, wading, aquatic climbing, aquatic stepping, paddling, aquatic recovery and aquatic bicycling.
To meet the requirements for different functions and to ensure safety, reliability, environment gracefulness, hygiene and environmental protection, the design must cooperate closely with relevant professional design, e.g. civil work, electrical, sports technology design and aquatic entertainment, so as to guarantee maximized social and economic benefits.
1.0.4 Selection of equipment and installations complying with national product standards is a principle that must be complied with by designing personnel. Only in this way can the normal operation of system be guaranteed. Since there are still some swimming pool water purification equipment products having no national and professional standards available, design selection shall be carried out based on product appraisal or technical review document to ensure product quality reliability, safety and serviceability.
1.0.5 This specification is a professional specification and specifies the design, parameters, equipment configuration, and control requirements of circulating water purification system. However, water supply/drainage or water supply for firefighting for auxiliary facilities of swimming pool, e.g. office, material storehouse, bathroom, toilet and medical assistance, are not covered hereby but have corresponding national specifications which shall be complied with in design.

2.1 Terms
Allowing for the realities and practice of China, this specification has reorganized the vocabulary entries about swimming pool and other data given in "Chinese Dictionary of Civil Engineering – Building Equipment" by reference to the relevant entries given in national specifications of swimming pool in U.S., UK, etc.
There are quite a lot of terms about swimming pool, involving sports competition, sports technology design, architectural design, air conditioning and ventilation, electrical lighting and safety warning. Allowing for the user of this specification, only those regarding the design, construction, maintenance and management of water supply and drainage engineering of swimming pool are given and the terms which are mentioned in this specification and have been listed in other specifications are not relisted hereby.
The terms are listed in their order of presence in this specification.
