3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
effective atomic number (Zeff)
The theoretical elemental atomic number representing the X-ray attenuation characteristics of a certain material.
3.2
effective organic material
A substance with an effective atomic number lower than 10.
3.3
effective inorganic material
A substance with an effective atomic number higher than 18.
3.4
impenetrable area
The area where the X-ray intensity reaching the X-ray detector after attenuation by the inspected object is almost zero, and the equipment cannot identify the basic structural features of the inspected object.
3.5
undetermined area
The area where the X-ray can penetrate but the signal is insufficient to accurately identify the material characteristics of the inspected object.
3.6
dose per inspection
The air kerma absorbed by the inspected object when it receives one inspection.
Note: The unit of dose per inspection is gray (Gy), 1 Gy = 1 J/kg.
3.7
ambient dose equivalent rate [H*(10)]
The quotient of dH(10) and dt, where dH(10) is the increment of the ambient dose equivalent in the time interval dt.
Note: The SI unit of ambient dose equivalent rate is sievert per second (Sv·s⁻¹). The unit of ambient dose equivalent rate is the quotient of the sievert or its multiples or submultiples and an appropriate unit of time (e.g., mSv·h⁻¹).
