1 Scope
This standard specifies the basic requirements for design and installation of steering system structures of motor vehicles.
This standard is applicable to Category M and Category N on-road motor vehicles.
2 Terminology
For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply.
2.1
steering system
all the equipment which is intended to alter the direction of movement of the vehicle and is composed of steering control, steering gear, steered wheels and special equipment
2.2
steering control
the part directly operated by the driver in order to steer the vehicle
2.3
steering gear
all the components between steering control and the steered wheels, with the exception of the special equipment. The steering gear may be mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electric or a combination of any of these. In the case of trailers, 'steering gear' means all the components which transmit to the steered wheels the force necessary in order to obtain a change in the direction of movement of the vehicle.
