3 Design guidelines
3.1 Classification
Hazard pictorials are classified into two types: hazard description pictorials and hazard avoidance pictorials. Hazard description pictorials are representational description of the hazards and describe the consequences if one fails to avoid the hazard; hazard avoidance pictorials are representational description used to instruct persons about how to avoid hazards.
3.2 Dimensions and colors
3.2.1 Hazard pictorials shall meet the requirements for dimensions of safety signs specified in GB 25517.1-2010. Hazard pictorials used in instruction manuals may be sized according to the actual situation, but shall be legible enough.
3.2.2 If hazard pictorials are used for pictorial-and-text or two-pictorial safety signs, the hazard description pictorial shall be properly sized to be enclosed by the safety alert triangle.
3.2.3 Hazard pictorials used in instruction manuals may be colored according to the actual situation, but this color shall make hazard pictorials legible enough.
3.3 Principles for graphic design of hazard pictorials

3.3.2 Representational pictorials shall be used for hazard pictorials, and abstract symbols should be avoided as much as possible.
3.3.3 The view (generally front or side) that is most easily recognized shall be used to describe the main hazard objects in the hazard pictorials.
3.3.4 Simplified solid graphics shall be used to represent the hazardous machine elements. Outline graphics of complete machines or of substantial portions of machines to locate hazardous areas or machine elements in context shall be used for easy recognition of the human figure.
