3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
jewellery
Ornaments intended to be worn by a person.
NOTE 1: Mainly made of one or more materials such as metals, gems (including natural and artificial gems), leather, fur, textiles, plastics, rubber, etc.
NOTE 2: According to the wearer, jewellery can be classified as adult jewellery and children's jewellery.
3.2
adult jewellery
Jewellery intended to be worn by adolescents aged 14 years and above or by adults.
[Source: GB/T 36927-2018, 3.1.2, modified]
3.3
children‘s jewellery
Jewellery intended to be worn by children under the age of 14 years.
[Source: GB/T 36927-2018, 3.1.1, modified]
3.4
coating
All layers of material that are formed or adhered onto the substrate material of jewellery.
NOTE: Includes paints, varnishes, lacquers, inks, polymers or other substances of a similar nature, regardless of whether they contain metal particles or the method by which they are applied to the jewellery, and which can be scraped off with a sharp blade.
[Source: GB/T 6675.4—2025, 3.2, modified]
3.5
hazardous elements
A general term for chemical elements that can cause harm to human health during use.
NOTE: In this document, hazardous elements mainly refer to nickel, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, antimony, barium, selenium, etc.
3.6
total content of hazardous elements or hazardous substances
The proportion, in a single product, of the mass of a given hazardous element (3.5) or class of hazardous substances to the total mass of the material or component.
3.7
soluble content of hazardous elements
The proportion, of the mass of a hazardous element (3.5) that dissolves in a specified solvent to the total mass of the material or component.
NOTE: Expressed in milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).
4 General principles
4.1 In the absence of adult supervision, children under 36 months of age are not recommended to wear jewellery.
4.2 This document specifies safety requirements for commonly used materials in jewellery. Jewellery manufactured using relevant materials need only comply with the corresponding requirements for those materials. Materials that are not used need not satisfy the related requirements.
EXAMPLE 1: Children‘s jewellery made solely of metallic materials does not require testing for banned aromatic amines, formaldehyde or plasticisers.
EXAMPLE 2: Adult jewellery (nonlingual jewellery) made of plastic materials and 18K gold shall comply with the requirements of 5.1.1, 5.2.1, 5.2.2, 5.2.3, 5.2.7, 5.2.8, 5.3.1 and 5.3.2.
4.3 To facilitate the implementation of this document, Table 1 lists the clauses corresponding to the technical requirements for adult jewellery and children’s jewellery.
5 Technical requirements
