3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
recycled zinc and zinc alloy raw materials
Zinc and zinc alloy raw materials obtained from recycled metal zinc and zinc alloys and their products after classification and pretreatment, meeting the requirements for direct production and utilization.
Note: Zinc alloy refers to an alloy with zinc as the base metal, to which one or more elements are added to achieve certain predetermined characteristics. Commonly added alloying elements include aluminium, copper, magnesium, silicon, rare earth elements, etc.
3.2
sample
A specific quantity of material extracted from the entire batch that is fully representative of the property characteristics of the raw material.
3.3
foreign substance
Non-metallic substances that are mixed into the raw materials during production, collection, packaging and transportation.
Note: Includes waste wood, waste paper, waste plastics, waste rubber, waste glass, stones and powdery substances (dust, sludge, crystalline salts, metal oxides, fibres, etc.), but does not include packaging materials and other substances used during transportation.
3.4
coating
Organic materials applied to the surface layer of the raw material.
Note: Coatings generally include marking paints, anti-rust paints, insulating layers, etc.
3.5
volatile substance
Substances that can be naturally separated from the raw material by appropriate heat treatment at a temperature of 350 °C.
Note: Includes the following substances:
— Free water adhering to the raw material and identifiable at the time of delivery, referred to as moisture. Moisture may be introduced into the raw material during production, collection, packaging, storage or transportation.
— Organic substances such as oils, greases and emulsions adhering to the raw material.

3.6
non-zinc metal
Metal substances other than zinc and zinc alloys that are mixed into the raw material during production, collection, packaging, storage and transportation.
Note: Non-zinc metals generally include free iron, aluminium and aluminium alloys, copper and copper alloys, etc.
3.7
physical quantity of zinc and zinc alloy
The ratio of the amount of zinc and zinc alloy in a sample of unit mass, after removal of foreign substances, other volatiles and non-zinc metals, to the original sample mass.
Note: Expressed as a mass fraction.
3.8
metal recovery rate
The ratio of the mass of the ingot obtained after removal of foreign substances and non-zinc metals by pretreatment, melting, slag removal and solidification from a sample of unit mass, to the original sample mass.
Note: Expressed as a mass fraction.
3.9
chemical composition sample
A sample taken directly from the raw material or prepared after melting, used for the determination of zinc and other element contents.
3.10
radioactive contamination
The amount of undesirable radioactive substances present on the surface of raw materials exceeding their natural occurrence, causing technical problems or radiation hazards.
[Source: SN/T 0570-2023, 3.4]
3.11
dismantling
The process of separating zinc-containing components from recycled zinc and zinc alloy products.
Note: For example, separating zinc-containing components from electrical appliances, equipment and automotive parts; separating zinc-containing components from locks and hardware.
3.12
crushing and separation
The process of further cutting, crushing and separating the dismantled zinc-containing components using specialized equipment.
Note: For example, separating foreign substances such as plastics, wood, ceramics and insulating layers from zinc-containing components by crushing and separation.
3.13
sorting
The process of sorting the zinc-containing components after dismantling, crushing and separation, after removal of foreign substances, by shape and alloy type.
3.14
treatment
The process of cleaning (degreasing), drying and baling the sorted zinc-containing metal objects.
