It is the user’s responsibility to take appropriate safety, health and environmental protection measures and ensure compliance with relevant national laws and regulations.
1 Scope
This document describes the test methods for hydrostatic sealing performance, steam sealing performance, methane sealing performance and thermal cycle test of spiral wound gaskets.
This document applies to spiral wound gaskets. Other types of gaskets may be used for reference.
2 Normative References
The following documents contain provisions which, through normative reference in this text, constitute indispensable provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

4 Test Method for Hydrostatic Sealing Performance
4.1 Testing Machine
4.1.1 The testing machine consists of a loading device, flanges, hydrostatic loading unit and corresponding indicating instruments, as shown in Figure 1.
4.1.2 Loading shall adopt hydraulic mode, or bolt connection, to provide sufficient preload specific pressure and maintain for the time specified in the test.
4.1.3 The flange is used for mounting specimens; raised face flange shall be adopted. The surface roughness Ra of sealing face shall not be greater than 3.2 μm, and the material shall be Grade 20 steel.
4.1.4 The hydrostatic loading unit shall supply the specified pressure and keep such pressure for the specified duration.
4.1.5 The accuracy grade of pressure gauge used in the test apparatus shall be no less than Grade 1.6. The full-scale limit of pressure gauge shall be 1.5 to 3 times the test pressure, and the dial diameter shall be no less than 100 mm.
4.2 Specimen
Unless otherwise specified, the specimen shall be spiral wound gasket with nominal diameter DN80, with inner ring and locating ring.
4.3 Test Conditions
Unless otherwise specified, test conditions shall comply with Table 1.
4.4 Test Procedure
4.4.1 Place the specimen on the clean lower flange face and apply the specified preload specific pressure.
4.4.2 Open vent valve K1, start the hydrostatic loading unit and fill water into the flange cavity. After air in the system is exhausted, close valve K1. Restart the hydrostatic loading unit for pressurization. After reaching the specified pressure, close valve K2 and shut down the hydrostatic loading unit. Hold the pressure for the specified time and observe whether water droplets appear on the outer edge of specimen during the pressure holding period.
4.4.3 After test completion, open valve K2, drain water from flange cavity, release preload specific pressure, take out specimen and inspect whether the specimen has warpage and deformation.
4.5 Result Judgement
If no water droplets appear on the outer edge of specimen during pressure holding period, the specimen is deemed qualified for hydrostatic sealing performance under this test pressure. If water droplets appear on the outer edge of specimen during pressure holding period, the specimen is deemed unqualified for hydrostatic sealing performance under this test pressure.
5 Test Method for Steam Sealing Performance
5.1 Testing Machine
5.1.1 The testing machine consists of gasket loading system, test medium supply system, test flanges, etc., as shown in Figure 2.
5.1.2 The loading device adopts hydraulic equipment or bolt connection. It shall provide sufficient preload specific pressure to steadily compress the specimen onto the autoclave and maintain such preload specific pressure for the specified time.
5.1.3 The autoclave for specimen mounting adopts raised face sealing surface, surface roughness Ra ≤3.2 μm, material 1Cr18Ni9Ti steel.
5.1.4 The steam generator shall be capable of producing steam with specified temperature and pressure within 2 hours starting from ambient temperature.
5.2 Apparatus
5.2.1 Analytical balance: accuracy 0.0001 g.
5.2.2 Glass container: volume 10 mL ~ 20 mL.
5.3 Instruments
5.3.1 Temperature indicating instrument: accuracy Grade 0.5.
5.3.2 Pressure indicating instrument: accuracy Grade 0.5.
5.4 Specimen
Unless otherwise specified, the specimen shall be spiral wound gasket with nominal diameter DN80, with inner ring and locating ring.
5.5 Test Conditions
Unless otherwise specified, test conditions shall be implemented in accordance with Table 2.
5.6 Test Procedure
5.6.1 Correctly place the specimen and sealing ring on the clean sealing face of autoclave and apply the specified preload specific pressure.
5.6.2 Start the water pump and fill water into the steam generator.
5.6.3 Start the steam generator to raise temperature until the specified temperature and pressure are reached and maintained for the required time.
5.6.4 Inject a certain amount of cold water into the glass container, weigh it with balance and record reading m.
