3 Terms and Definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1 test sample
A portion of material taken from a tested sample for the determination of a particular quality characteristic.
3.2 precious metal adornment
An adornment made of precious metals (gold, silver, platinum, palladium) and their alloys.
3.3 sampling inspection by attributes
Inspection whereby either the unit of product is classified simply as conforming or nonconforming, or the number of nonconformities in the unit of product is counted, with respect to a specified requirement or set of requirements.
NOTE 1: Sampling inspection by attributes includes both the inspection of whether the product is conforming and the inspection of the number of nonconformities per 100 units of product.
NOTE 2: The number of nonconformities per 100 units of product is the total number of nonconformities in all units of the lot divided by the lot size, multiplied by 100. That is:
(Total number of nonconformities in the lot / Lot size) × 100.
[Source: GB/T 2828.1-2012, 3.1.3]
3.4 lotbylot inspection
Inspection carried out on each lot of a series of lots.
3.5 periodic inspection
Inspection carried out to determine whether the stability of a production process over a specified period (specified by time or by the number of product units manufactured) meets the specified requirements, by drawing samples from one or more lots that have passed lotbylot inspection.
[Source: GB/T 2829-2025, 3.1.19]
3.6 audit sampling inspection
Sampling inspection carried out independently by the auditing party on a population of products that has been accepted after inspection, to determine whether the audited population is acceptable.
3.7 sampling plan
A combination of the sample size to be used and the associated lot acceptance criteria.
3.8 single sampling plan
A sampling plan consisting of the sample size combined with the decision array [Ac, Re].
[Source: GB/T 2829-2025, 3.1.27]
3.9 item
A basic unit for the purpose of implementing sampling inspection.
EXAMPLE: A single product, a pair of products, a set of products, a component, or a specified length, area, volume or mass of product. It may or may not be the same as the unit of product specified for procurement, sale, production or shipment.
3.10 lot
A definable quantity of a product, material or service accumulated under conditions that are considered uniform.
[Source: GB/T 2829-2025, 3.1.2]
3.11 lot size
The number of items in a lot.

3.12 sample
A group of items drawn from a lot that is intended to provide information about the lot.
[Source: GB/T 2828.1-2012, 3.1.15]
3.13 sample unit
An item selected from a lot for inspection.
[Source: GB/T 2829-2025, 3.1.4]
3.14 sample size
The number of sample units in a sample.
[Source: GB/T 3358.2-2009, 1.2.26, modified]
3.15 audit population
The entire set of items subject to audit.
[Source: GB/T 2828.11-2008, 3.1.4]
3.16 nonconformity
The failure of a quality characteristic of an item to meet specified requirements.
NOTE 1: According to the importance of the quality characteristic of the item or the severity of the nonconformity, nonconformities are generally classified as Class A nonconformities, Class B nonconformities and Class C nonconformities.
NOTE 2: A Class A nonconformity is a nonconformity of a critically important quality characteristic of an item, or a very serious nonconformity of a quality characteristic of an item.
NOTE 3: A Class B nonconformity is a nonconformity of an important quality characteristic of an item, or a serious nonconformity of a quality characteristic of an item.
NOTE 4: A Class C nonconformity is a nonconformity of a general quality characteristic of an item, or a slight nonconformity of a quality characteristic of an item.
