本部分为GB/T 15972的第34部分，本部分代替GB/T 15972.3-1998《光纤总规范　第３部分：机械性能试验方法》第18章、第19章。本标准规定了测量未涂覆光纤翘曲或固有曲率半径的试验方法，确立了测量的统一试验程序和技术要求。本标准适用于对A1、A2、A3类多模光纤和B类单模光纤的测量。
本部分与GB/T 15972.3-1998第18章、19章相比主要变化如下：
———原正文中的两种试验方法详细描述分别用附录Ａ 和附录Ｂ 的形式给出（１９９８ 年版的１８ 章、１９章，本版的附录Ａ、附录Ｂ）；
———旋转光纤的步幅由原来的10°～15°改为10°～20°（１９９８ 年版的１８．４．２，本版的６．２、Ａ．３．２、Ｂ．３．２）；　
———删除了式（Ｂ．１）推导的附录（１９９８年版的附录Ｄ，式（２４）的推导）；
———试验标准大气条件改为：温度２３℃±５℃；相对湿度４５％±２５％（见本版的３章）。
