Unified numbering system for designation of iron, steel and alloy
1 Scope
This standard specifies the general requirements, structural types, classification and grouping, coding rules, compilation and management of the unified numerical codes for designations of iron, steel and alloy products (referred to as "ISC").
This standard is applicable to the compilation of ISCs for designations of iron, steel and alloy products. For any iron, steel and alloy products listed in national standards and professional standards, their product designation and ISC shall be included in such standards at the same time, and both are in reference to each other, and both methods of representation are valid.

3 General requirements
3.1 The product classification, definitions and product designation names used in this standard shall conform to the relevant requirements of the standards listed in Clause 2.
3.2 An ISC consists of a fixed six-digit symbol. The left first digit is prefixed with a capitalized Latin letter (usually "I" and "O" are not used), followed by five Arabic numerals, with no gap between the letter and numerals.
3.3 Each ISC applies to only one product designation; conversely, each product designation corresponds to only one ISC. When a product designation is canceled, the corresponding ISC is no longer assigned to any other product designation in general.
4 Structural types
The structure of the ISC is as follows:
5 Classification and grouping
5.1 The classification and grouping of iron, steel and alloy are mainly based on their basic composition, characteristics and uses, taking into account the existing customary classification methods in China and the actual number of various product designations.
5.2 The classification, grouping and sequential numbering of iron, steel and alloy shall have certain spare empty digits by taking full account of the development of various kinds of iron, steel and alloy and the emergence of new materials.
