Methods for the determination of prohibited substances in furniture products and related materials - Aldehydes and ketones
1 Scope
This document describes a high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of aldehydes and ketones in furniture products and related materials.
This document is applicable to the determination of aldehydes and ketones released from furniture products and related raw materials.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain requirements which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
aldehydes and ketones
all volatile organic compounds containing carbonyl groups released from furniture samples and detected in the air at the sampling port of the climate chamber
Note: Aldehydes and ketones include but are not limited to formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acrolein, acetone, benzaldehyde, butyraldehyde, n-valeraldehyde, 2, 5-dimethylbenzaldehyde, butenal, isovaleraldehyde, propionaldehyde, hexanal, o-tolualdehyde, p-tolualdehyde, m-tolualdehyde, etc.
4 Principle
In order to simulate the loading state of furniture, the samples are placed in a climate chamber under certain conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air flow rate) according to the specified loading rate, and the aldehydes and ketones released from furniture samples are mixed with the air entering the climate chamber and discharged from the chamber outlet. Adsorbent 2, 4-dinitrophenylphenylhydrazine (DNPH) is used for capturing aldehydes and ketones in a certain volume of gas at the outlet of the climate chamber, and the release concentration of aldehydes and ketones captured is measured by analytical instruments. According to the release concentration, product loading rate and gas exchange rate, the release rate of aldehydes and ketones in furniture samples is calculated.
DNPH sampling tube actively collects a certain volume of outlet air of climate chamber, and the components of aldehydes and ketones in the outlet air react with DNPH of sampling tube to produce stable derivative compound 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazone, which is eluted with acetonitrile, separated by reversed-phase liquid chromatography column, determined by a high performance liquid chromatograph with ultraviolet detector or two-stage array tube detector, and quantified by the external standard method. See Figure 1 for the schematic diagram.
