本标准规定了测定橡胶胶丝一般物理机械性能的试验方法。同时还规定了胶丝与织物接触时的特定机械性能。由于胶丝横截面较小，而且在特定场合下使用，因而制定了一些专用的试验方法。
本标准适用于天然橡胶或合成聚异戊二烯橡胶制成的胶丝。对于由其它合成橡胶（如聚氨酯橡胶）制成的胶丝，本标准中的一些试验方法并不完全适用。
