Measurement of copper and other elements in brake friction materials 1 Scope This standard specifies the preparation and analysis methods of samples for the measurement of copper and other elements in brake friction materials. This standard is applicable to unused brake friction materials. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB 5085.3-2007 Identification standards for hazardous wastes - Identification for extraction toxicity GB/T 15555.1 Solid waste - Determination of total mercury - Cold atomic absorption spectrometry GB/T 15555.4 Solid waste - Determination of chromium(VI) - 1, 5 Diphenylcarbohydrazide spectrophotometric method GB/T 23942 Chemical reagents - General rules for inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry GB/T 23946 Inorganic chemicals for industrial use - General method for the determination of lead content - Atomic absorption spectrometry 3 Specimen preparation 3.1 Sampling 3.1.1 Wipe the whole friction assembly with lint-free paper (such as thin and soft absorbent paper), and wipe it repeatedly if necessary, to ensure that there is no dust or foreign matters on the assembly. In addition, rinse the assembly with deionized water, and then blot the water with lint-free paper. 3.1.2 Measure the thickness of friction material. If there is no steel back or shoe, just measure the thickness of the friction material. For friction assembly, the thickness of friction material may be measured directly as shown in Figure 1, or it may be obtained by subtracting the thickness of steel back or shoe from the thickness of friction assembly measured.
