3 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this document.
3.1
textile floor coverings
Products having a use surface (pile surface) composed of textile materials, generally intended to be laid on the floor.
NOTE: Textile floor coverings may be plain or patterned.
3.2
carpet underlay
An elastic layer placed between the carpet and the floor, made of textile materials and/or other materials.
3.3
air change rate
Ratio of the volume of clean air entering the emission test chamber per hour to the effective volume of the emission test chamber.
3.4
emission test chamber
Chamber with controllable operating parameters used to test the emission of volatile organic compounds from floor coverings.
3.5
product loading factor
Ratio of the exposed surface area of the test specimen to the effective volume of the chamber.
3.6
areaspecific emission rate; SER.
The mass of volatile organic compounds released per unit time and per unit area of the test specimen within a given period after the start of the test.
NOTE: "Specific emission rate" is sometimes used instead of "areaspecific emission rate".
3.7
total volatile organic compound; TVOC
Sum of the concentrations of identified or unidentified volatile organic compounds separated on a nonpolar capillary column and detected by gas chromatography, with retention times between nhexane and nhexadecane, inclusive.
NOTE: Individually determined compounds may be quantified separately. Unidentified peak areas are converted to concentrations using the toluene response factor.
3.8
polyvinyl chloride flooring
Flooring intended for indoor floor covering, produced primarily from polyvinyl chloride as the main raw material.
