1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, model compilation method, classification and basic parameters, requirements, test methods, inspection rules, marking, packing, transportation and storage, and requirements for qualification certificate and the compilation of instructions of flame arresters for petroleum gas pipeline systems.
This standard is applicable to the dry flame arresters (hereinafter referred to as "flame arrester") mounted in petroleum gas pipeline systems, but it may also be adopted as a reference to other flame arresters.
2 Normative References
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the dated editions apply to this standard. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document (include all the amendments) is applicable to this document.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purpose of this standard, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1 Pipeline flame arrester
It refers to the device mounted in the pipeline conveying combustible gas to prevent flame transmission (deflagration or detonation), which consists of fire arresting trim, flame arrester enclosure and accessories.
3.2 Deflagration flame arrester
It refers to the flame arrester which prevents deflagration from transmitting. Deflagration is the combustion reaction spreads in the forms of heat conduction and diffusion at subsonic velocity with respect to the medium ahead.
3.3 Detonation flame arrester
It refers to the flame arrester which prevents detonation from transmitting. Detonation is the combustion reaction spreads in the form of shock compression at supersonic speed with respect to the medium ahead.
3.4 Endurance burning flame arrester
It refers to the flame arrester which prevents flame from transmitting both in and after the burning endurance.
3.5 Maximum experimental safety gap, MESG
It refers to the width of slit (25mm long) which is exactly impassable to flame under the standard test conditions (0.1MPa, 20℃).
Note: This is the international definition which is taken from standard MESG test device.
