Method for determination of fineness of cement — Sieve analysis method
1 Scope
This document specifies the principle of the method, testing instruments and laboratory environmental conditions, operating procedure, and calculation and processing of results for the sieve analysis method for determination of fineness of cement.
This document is applicable to the sieve analysis methods for the determination of fineness of powdery materials such as cement and admixtures, including the air-jet sieving method and the water sieving method. The air-jet sieving method is the reference method, and the water sieving method is the alternative method. In the event of a dispute, the results of the air-jet sieving method shall be considered final.

For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 5329 apply.
4 Principle of the method
The air-jet sieving method uses a high-speed air stream ejected from a rotating nozzle to disperse the powdery material. A stable negative pressure is maintained in the closed system, which accelerates the passage of fine particles smaller than the sieve opening through the sieve mesh, while coarse particles are retained on the sieve as sieve residue. The water sieving method uses powdery material evenly spread on the sieve mesh. Under the combined action of a stable water flow and vibration of the sieve mesh, fine particles smaller than the sieve opening pass through the sieve with the water flow, while coarse particles are retained on the sieve as sieve residue. Both the air-jet sieving method and the water sieving method express fineness as the mass fraction of sieve residue to the powdery material.
5 Testing instruments and laboratory environmental conditions
5.1 Test sieves
5.1.1 A test sieve consists of a circular sieve frame and a sieve mesh. The sieve mesh shall be of plain weave. The sieve opening sizes of the 0.9 mm test sieve, 0.080 mm test sieve and 0.045 mm test sieve shall comply with the requirements of 0.9 mm for R20 series, 0.080 mm for R20 series and 0.045 mm for R20/3 series in GB/T 6005.
Test sieves are divided into air-jet sieves (schematic diagram shown in Figure 1) and water sieves (schematic diagram shown in Figure 2). The air-jet sieve shall be provided with a transparent sieve cover that provides a good seal with the sieve frame.
5.1.2 The sieve mesh shall be tightly stretched over the sieve frame, and the contact area between the sieve mesh and the sieve frame shall be sealed with waterproof adhesive.
5.1.3 The inspection method for sieve opening sizes shall be in accordance with GB/T 6003.1. Before first use, test sieves shall be calibrated using GSB 08-3914 or a certified reference material. The calibration method shall be in accordance with Annex A, and the correction factor shall be within the range of 0.80 to 1.20.
5.2 Air-jet sieve analyzer
The composition and other requirements of the sieve analyzer shall comply with JC/T 728. The distance between the upper surface of the nozzle opening and the sieve mesh shall be between 2 mm and 8 mm.
5.3 Water sieve stand and spray nozzle
The structural dimensions of the water sieve stand and spray nozzle shall comply with JC/T 728.
5.4 Balance
The maximum capacity shall be not less than 100 g, and the scale division value shall not be greater than 0.01 g.
5.5 Laboratory environmental conditions
When performing the air-jet sieving test, the relative humidity of the laboratory shall not be greater than 50%.
