Geosynthetics - Determination of the effective opening size - Dry sieving method
1 Scope
This document describes a test method for determining the effective opening size of geosynthetics including geotextiles by the dry sieve method.
This document is applicable to the testing of various geosynthetics including geotextiles.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
passing rate
ratio of the mass of the standard granular materials passing through the test specimen after the standard granular materials are sieved to the total mass of the standard granular materials
3.2
effective opening size
Oe
diameter of an approximate maximum granule that can effectively pass through the test specimen
Note: For example, O90 indicates that 90% of the standard granular materials with that diameter fail to pass through the test specimen after such materials are sieved, with the sieve rate as 10%.
4 Principle
First, vibrate standard granular materials of a certain mass and with a certain diameter on the test specimen, i.e., the sieve cloth made of geotextile cloth or any other geosynthetics. Then, weigh the mass of the standard granular materials passing through the test specimen and calculate the passing rate. Afterwards, use standard granular materials with different diameters for the test, plotting the curve of the diameter of the standard granular materials versus their passing rate, which is the opening size distribution curve of the test specimen, and calculate the effective opening size Oe (e.g., O90 or O95).
