This document is developed in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2020 Directives for standardization - Part 1: Rules for the structure and drafting of standardizing documents.
This document replaces GB/T 16984-2008 Raw hemp. In addition to structural adjustments and editorial changes, the following main technical changes have been made with respect GB/T 16984-2008:
a) The classification of raw hemp has been modified (see Clause 4 hereof; 3.2 of Edition 2008);
b) The terms and technical requirements related to dew-retting hemp have been added (see 3.5, and Clause 5 hereof);
c) The requirements for grading have been modified (see 5.1 hereof; 4.1.2 of Edition 2008);
d) The clause "Instruments and tools" has been deleted (see Clause 5 in Edition 2008);
e) The indicator "bundle fiber breaking tenacity" has been changed to "breaking strength" (see 6.5 hereof; 8.3 of Edition 2008);
f) The inspection rules have been added (see Clause 7);
g) The clause "Calculation of conditioned weight" has been deleted (see Clause 10 of Edition 2008).

1 Scope
This document specifies the classification, requirements, inspection rules, packaging, marking, transport, storage, and corresponding test methods for raw hemp.
This document is applicable to the quality grade evaluation of raw hemp.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.

raw hemp
hemp bast used as raw material for textiles
3.2
water retted hemp
hemp bast derived from hemp straws after water retting, rinsing, stripping, and drying
3.3
sunned hemp
hemp bast stripped from hemp straws after procedures of drying, stacking, and solar exposure
3.4
peeling hemp from green straw
hemp bast that is peeled immediately after hemp harvest

Raw hemp is divided into four categories based on the processing technique: water retted hemp, sunned hemp, peeling hemp from green straw, and dew-retting hemp.
