1 Scope
This standard specifies the bench test methods for the performance of road vehicle engines, including the dynamic and economic test methods under various loads, the power test methods for no-load starting, idling and mechanical loss, and the test methods for piston leakage related to cylinder tightness and engine oil consumption, etc., all of which are used to evaluate the performance of road vehicle engines.
This standard is applicable to internal combustion engines of cars, trucks and other land vehicles, while not applicable to those of motorcycles and tractors. The internal combustion engine is of reciprocating and rotor type other than free piston type, including spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, two-stroke and four-stroke engines, non-supercharged and supercharged engines (mechanical supercharged, turbo-charged and intercooled), water-cooled and air-cooled engines.
Type approval test on newly designed and significantly improved engines, verification test for engine produced by changing production line and quality inspection test for engine produced freshly shall be carried out in accordance with the methods specified in this standard.
This standard may also serve as technical basis for association between engine manufacturer and road vehicle manufacturer.
