GB/T 4857.4-2008 Packaging - Basic tests for transport packages - Part 4: Compression and stacking tests using a compression tester
1 Scope
This part of GB/T 4857 specifies the test principles, performance indicators of the equipment used, test procedures and contents of the test report for the compression test of transport packages and the stacking test carried out with the same test equipment.
This part is applicable to assessing the performance of a package in terms of its strength or the protection it offers to its contents when it is subjected to compressive forces. It can be used either as a standalone test or as a component of a series of tests.
2 Normative references
The following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this part of GB/T 4857, constitute provisions of this part. For dated references, subsequent amendments (excluding corrections) to, or revisions of, any of these publications do not apply to this part. However, parties to agreements based on this part are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies.
GB/T 4857.2 Packaging - Basic tests for transport packages - Part 2: Temperature and humidity conditioning (GB/T 4857.2-2005, ISO 2233:2000, MOD)
GB/T 4857.3 Packaging - Basic tests for transport packages - Part 3: Stacking test methods using a static load (GB/T 4857.3-2008, ISO 2234:2000, IDT)
3 Test principle
The test package is placed between the platens of a compression tester and either:
a) in the case of a compression test, a load is applied until failure occurs or predetermined values for load or displacement are reached; or
b) in the case of a stacking test, a predetermined load is applied for a predetermined time or until failure occurs.
4 Test equipment
4.1 Compression tester
4.1.1 Compression tester, motor-driven, with mechanical or hydraulic transmission, capable of applying load through uniform movement of one or both platens at a relative speed of 10mm/min±3mm/min.
Note 1: The comparison between results obtained from equipment operated at other speeds (for example 12.5mm/min±2.5mm/min) and results obtained at 10mm/min±3mm/min is not recommended.
Note 2: For certain packagings, such as metal drums or wooden crates, lower speeds may be required to prevent load peaks in excess of the predetermined value.
4.1.2 The platens shall meet the following requirements:
