1 General Provisions
1.1.0.1 In order to adapt to requirements of museum construction and guarantee building design of museums to meet basic requirements for applicability, safety and sanitation, this code is prepared.
1.1.0.2 This code is applicable to new construction and extension designs for museums of social history and natural history. Renovation design and design of other museums may be carried out by reference to relevant provisions of this code.
1.1.0.3 Museums are classified into large, medium and small sizes. Generally, the large size (with building scale greater than 10000m2) is applicable to museums directly subordinate to ministries and commissions under central government and those of all provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities; the medium size (with building scale being 4000~10000m2) is applicable to museums directly subordinate to systematic provincial departments (bureaus) and those of provincially administered municipalities (territories); the small size (with building scale less than 4000m2) is applicable to museums directly subordinate to bureaus of all systematic municipalities (territories) and counties (county-level cities) and those of all counties (county-level cities).
Note: building scale only refers to area sum for business and auxiliary buildings of museum, excluding the area of residential buildings of employees.
1.1.0.4 Fire resistance grade of buildings in collection reservoir zone and display zone shall not be lower than 2. Service life of large and medium museums shall not be less than 100 years and that of small ones shall not be less than 50 years.
1.1.0.5 Museum buildings must meet the requirements of planning layout for urban culture buildings and shall reflect the advanced level of architecture art, science and technology and cultural development in location area.
1.1.0.6 Design of museum buildings must be matched with the complete process design and meet the basic functions of collection & storage, scientific research and display & exhibition of collections and shall be arranged with matched service facilities for the audience.
1.1.0.7 Renovation design of historic building must meet all laws and regulations of cultural relic and keep the original building style and shall meet the safety requirements for fire protection and burglary prevention. The collection warehouse should be newly-built.
1.1.0.8 Design of museum buildings shall meet not only the requirements stipulated in this code but also the requirements of current "Code for Design of Civil Buildings" (JGJ 37) and relevant design standards and specifications issued by the nation and specialized departments.

1 General Provisions
