3 Terms and definitions
For the purpose of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
industrial anti-corrosive epoxy coating
two-component liquid coating with epoxy resin or modified epoxy resin as main film-forming material, which is mainly used for the protection of steel structures in industries such as ship, bridge, infrastructure, petrochemical and energy
3.2
high solids epoxy coating
solvent-based epoxy coating with the non-volatile matter by volume of 70%~85% and the volatile organic compounds content less than 250g/L measured under standard application condition according to the specified method
3.3
ultra high solids epoxy coating
solvent-based epoxy coating with the non-volatile matter greater than 88% and the volatile organic compounds content less than 150g/L measured under standard application condition according to the specified method
3.4
solvent-free epoxy coating
epoxy coating with the non-volatile matter greater than 97% and the volatile organic compounds content less than 60g/L measured under standard application condition according to the specified method
3.5
non-volatile matter by volume, NVv
volume percentage of residue obtained after volatilization under specified condition
3.6
non-volatile matter, NV
residue (by mass) obtained after volatilization under specified condition
3.7
standard application condition
state in which application may also be carried out given that VOCs range still meets the requirements of the corresponding products in Table 1 at 25℃, irrespective of adding diluent, where the application method and condition meet the requirements in the technical specifications of those products
3.8
volatile organic compounds, VOCs
any organic liquid or solid that may evaporate naturally at normal temperature and pressure of the atmospheric environment where it is present
Note 1: for the term VOCs currently used in the coating field, see volatile organic compounds (VOCs) content.
Note 2: as specified in U.S. government regulations, the term VOCs is limited to those compounds with photochemical activity in the atmosphere (see ASTM D3960), while any other compounds are defined as exempt compounds.
[See ISO 4618: 2006]
Note 3: as specified in European regulations such as European Union directive 2004/42/EC, the term VOCs refers to the volatile organic compounds with boiling points up to 250℃ under 101.325kPa of standard pressure.
3.9
volatile organic compounds content, VOCs content
content of volatile organic compounds measured in the coatings under specified condition
Note 1: the property and quantity of compound to be considered depend on the application field of coating. For each application field, the determination or calculation method and the limit are specified by laws or agreed by both parties.
[See ISO 4618: 2006]
Note 2: if the term VOCs refers to compounds defined with the highest boiling point, the compounds with boiling points lower than the limit are taken as VOCs content, while those with boiling points higher than the limit are taken as non-volatile organic compounds.
4 Requirements
High solids, ultra high solids and solvent-free epoxy coating shall meet the requirements of Table 1.
Table 1 Requirements
Classification NVv/% NV/% VOCs content/(g/L) Suggested test items
NVv NV VOCs content
High solids epoxy coating ≥70 ≥80 <250 √ — √
Ultra high solids epoxy coating ≥85 ≥88 <150 — √ √
Solvent-free epoxy coating ≥95 ≥97 <60 — √ √
Note 1: at present, NVv method is generally used to calculate for high solids epoxy coating, while the NV method should be used to calculate for ultra high solids epoxy coating and solvent-free coating to obtain the consistent test result of NVv and VOCs content.
Note 2: the NV of high solids epoxy coating, and the NVv of ultra high solids epoxy and solvent-free epoxy coating are optional test indexes (not compulsory).
Note 3: the NVv and VOCs content of high solids epoxy coating must meet the requirements of corresponding class at the same time before it is defined according to its class.
Note 4: the NV and VOCs content of ultra high solids epoxy and solvent-free epoxy coating must meet the requirements of corresponding classes at the same time before they are defined according to their classes.
