UMTS is the third-generation (3G) mobile telecommunication system with WCDMA air interface. The whole UMTS system consists of User Equipment (UE), UMTS Radio Access Network (UTRAN) and Core Network (CN). In this standard, UMTS system is also called as WCDMA telecommunication system.
WCDMA terminal equipment, also known as User Equipment (UE), can be classified into many types according to their different purposes and functions. The terminal shall provide corresponding compatibility interfaces according to the different connected devices, such as air interface, USB interface and infrared data interface between WCDMA terminal and WCDMA network equipment. The User Equipment shall include Mobile Equipment (ME) which can transmit and receive wireless signals, baseband processing and higher-layer application operation, and a detachable smart card USIM which can store data, programs and security identification. ME and USIM are connected by standard Cu interface. ME can be logically further classified into smaller unit equipment, which are Mobile Termination (MT) responsible for wireless reception and transmission and related functions, and Terminal Equipment (TE) responsible for operating end-to-end higher-layer applications, as shown in Figure 1. MT and TE can be connected by a variety of physical means (wired or wireless).
Figure 1 Logical Structure of WCDMA UE
In the logical structure diagram of WCDMA shown in Figure 2, UE is connected with Radio Network Subsystem (RNS) through WCDMA air interface (Uu interface), and communicates with Core Network (CN) through this access subsystem, thus completing the whole end-to-end service connection.
Figure 2 Position of UE in the Logical Structure of WCDMA System
5 Classification and Power Class of UE
5.1 Classification of UE
According to the size and application range of terminals, UE can be roughly classified as follows:
(a) Hand-held station (handset): ME that is small in size, suitable for hand-held and can independently support WCDMA telecommunication services and/or bearer services.
(b) On-board station: ME that cannot be used alone and needs to be installed/connected to a motor vehicle and can support WCDMA telecommunication services and/or bearer services. In general, its maximum transmit power class is larger than that of hand-held stations.
(c) Fixed wireless access station: ME that can support WCDMA telecommunication services and/or bearer services by replacing the wired connection of traditional fixed stations with wireless connection through WCDMA air interface technology. In general, its maximum transmit power class is larger than that of hand-held station, and external power supply is needed.
(d) Data card: MT that cannot be used independently and need to be connected with other equipment such as laptops or PDAs to support WCDMA telecommunication services or bearer services.
(e) Other terminals: MTs that do not belong to the above types and can be used independently or in conjunction with
