1 Scope
1.1 This part of GB 5296 establishes the principles and gives recommendations on the formulation of instructions for use of products of consumer interest (hereinafter referred to as instructions for use). It is intended for: ——Product designers, manufacturer, technical writers or other people engaged in the work of conceiving and drafting such instructions; ——Committees or organization preparing standards for consumer products. 1.2 The principles and detailed recommendations in this part shall apply in combination with the specific requirements on instructions for use laid down in standards for specific products or groups of products. 1.3 This part includes evaluation methods for instructions for use (see Annex A) to be used as evaluative methods and rationale to review the comprehensiveness of the instructions for use and assess the quality of the written instructions. The annex is addressed primarily to researchers and experts and organizations engaged in such assessment work; it may also be helpful to this part’s principal target groups and administrator named in 1.1.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply. 3.1 Consumer A member of society who purchases or uses a product of consumer interest or accepts a service in order to meet a need in their lives. 3.2 Products of consumer interest Products sold to meet the needs of members of society in their lives. 3.3 Instruction for use Information conveyed to users on how to use products correctly and safely and on product functions, basic properties, and characteristics relating to said products. It is usually presented in the form of instruction for use, label, or nameplate, can be represented by documents, words, marks, symbols, pictures or charts, graphic expressions, or audio or visual information, separately or in combination. It can be used on a product [including instructions on an operating device of equipment (keys or buttons) or instructions electronically displayed during operation] or on packaging, also delivered as accompanying documents or materials (e.g. loose-leaf information sheet, manuals, audio and video tapes, and CDs). Note: The instruction for use is a form to convey the product information in a comprehensive manner, therefore, more detailed requirements for it are proposed in this part.
4 General Principles
