This document applies to the design, manufacture, testing, inspection, use, and maintenance of various handheld electrostatic spray guns (liquid or powder) and their auxiliary devices.
2 Normative References
The provisions of the following documents, through normative references in this text, constitute essential provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies; for undated references, the latest version (including all amendments) applies.
GB/T 3836.1 Explosive atmospheres—Part 1: Equipment—General requirements
GB/T 4208 Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code)
3 Terms and Definitions
The terms and definitions defined in GB/T 3836.1 and the following apply to this document.
3.1 Electrostatic spray gun
A spray gun that utilizes electrostatic principles to apply liquid or powder coatings.
Note 1: Typically includes a housing, electrostatic discharge device, spray pattern control device, paint channel, air channel, built-in high-voltage generator, and adjustment mechanism.
Note 2: A built-in high-voltage generator is part of the spray gun.
Note 3: Includes electrostatic spray guns for liquid and powder coatings.
3.2 Auxiliary device
Essential equipment that supplies and controls the working voltage, current, and atomization of coatings for the electrostatic spray gun.
Note 1: Typically includes a gun controller, external high-voltage generator, atomization device, paint supply system, high/low-voltage cables, and drive motors.
Note 2: An external high-voltage generator is part of the auxiliary device.
3.3 Gun controller
A device that controls the high-voltage electrostatic output and paint spraying of the electrostatic spray gun.
3.4 Low-voltage cable
A cable connecting the electrostatic spray gun and gun controller in spray guns with built-in high-voltage generators.
3.5 High-voltage cable
A cable connecting the electrostatic spray gun and high-voltage generator in spray guns with external high-voltage generators.
4 General Requirements
4.1 Electrostatic spray guns and their auxiliary devices used in explosive atmospheres shall comply with the structural, enclosure, and intrinsically safe component requirements of the explosive atmosphere.
4.2 The enclosures of electrostatic spray guns and their auxiliary devices shall meet the "IP54" protection level requirements specified in GB/T 4208.
5 Mechanical Structure Safety Requirements
5.1 The strength and stiffness of the housing structure of electrostatic spray guns and their auxiliary devices shall comply with the following:
a) All components of the spray gun shall undergo impact tests as specified in 7.4. After testing, the housing shall have no cracks or damage, and the protection level shall remain "IP54";
b) The spray gun shall undergo drop tests as specified in 7.5. After testing, the housing shall have no cracks or damage.
5.2 The housings of electrostatic spray guns and their auxiliary devices shall have corrosion resistance to paint solvents.
5.3 The handle of the electrostatic spray gun shall have a conductive surface of no less than 20 cm², which shall be grounded with a grounding resistance of no more than 1 MΩ.
5.4 The connections of high- and low-voltage cables shall be secure and reliable, with no loosening or poor contact, and stress relief measures shall be taken at the joints.
5.5 High- and low-voltage cables shall undergo pull tests as specified in 7.6. During testing, there shall be no visible movement of the cable in the test fixture (limiter).
5.6 The shielding layer of high-voltage cables shall have an insulating sleeve that is wear-resistant.
5.7 Pressure-bearing components of the electrostatic spray gun and its auxiliary devices (for gas or liquid pressure) shall undergo pressure tests as specified in 7.7. During testing, the tested components shall show no leakage or damage.
5.8 Electrostatic spray guns and their auxiliary devices shall have reliable grounding with a grounding resistance of no more than 1 MΩ.
6 Electrical Safety Requirements
6.1 The shielding layer of the high-voltage cable shall be reliably grounded.
6.2 Non-energized metal parts on the electrostatic spray gun and its auxiliary devices shall be reliably connected to the high-voltage generator's grounding terminal.
6.3 The high-voltage generator shall be controlled by the mechanical or electrical switch device of the electrostatic spray gun. In the non-operating state, the trigger of the electrostatic spray gun shall be in the "off" position under spring action, and no locking device shall be set in the "on" position. After the electrostatic spray gun is turned on, there shall be an "on" indicator on the spray gun or controller.
6.4 The electrostatic spray gun and its auxiliary devices shall undergo high-voltage insulation tests as specified in 7.8. During the test, no electrical breakdown or surface flashover shall occur.
6.5 The high-voltage current-limiting components in the electrostatic spray gun and the gun controller shall be effectively insulated and protected. Short-circuit tests shall be conducted as specified in 7.9. During the test, the high-voltage current-limiting components and gun controller shall not be damaged.
6.6 The ignition energy generated during discharge of the electrostatic spray gun, whether in operation or not, shall be safe. The safe ignition energy for electrostatic spray guns shall not exceed 0.24 mJ, and for electrostatic powder spray guns, it shall not exceed 2 mJ.
