1 Scope
This standard specifies the high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the determination of migration amounts of benzoic acid, 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid (phthalic acid), 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (isophthalic acid), 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (terephthalic acid), 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (trimesic acid), 1,2,4-benzenetricarboxylic acid (trimellitic acid), and 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid (hemimellitic acid) in food contact materials and articles.
It applies to the determination of migration amounts of the aforementioned substances in plastic materials and articles, paper and board materials and articles, adhesives, coatings, and coating layers for food contact use.
2 Principle
After migration tests in accordance with GB 31604.1 and GB 5009.156, target analytes in olive oil and isooctane simulants are extracted with 50% (v/v) ethanol solution or acetonitrile solution (5+1). For 95% (v/v) ethanol simulant, the ethanol concentration is diluted to below 50%. Other simulants are directly injected for analysis. Target analytes are separated by liquid chromatography, detected by a UV detector or diode array detector, and quantified by external standard method.
3 Reagents and Materials
Unless otherwise specified, all reagents are of analytical grade, and water is grade 1 water as defined by GB/T 6682.
3.1 Reagents
3.1.1 Glacial acetic acid (C₂H₄O₂).
3.1.2 Anhydrous ethanol (C₂H₆O).
3.1.3 Acetonitrile (C₂H₃N).
3.1.4 95% ethanol.
3.1.5 Sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
3.1.6 n-Heptane (C₇H₁₆).
3.1.7 Isooctane (C₈H₁₈).
3.1.8 Phosphoric acid (H₃PO₄): chromatographic grade.
3.1.9 Acetonitrile (C₂H₃N): chromatographic grade.
3.2 Reagent Preparation
3.2.1 Food simulants: prepared in accordance with GB 5009.156.
3.2.2 0.05% (v/v) phosphoric acid solution: Pipette 0.5 mL phosphoric acid into a 1 L beaker, dissolve in 800 mL water, adjust pH to 2.7 with phosphoric acid, dilute to 1 L, and mix well.
3.2.3 Acetonitrile solution (5+1, v/v): Mix 50 mL acetonitrile (analytical grade) with 10 mL water.
3.2.4 Acetonitrile solution (1+1, v/v): Mix 50 mL acetonitrile (analytical grade) with 50 mL water.
3.2.5 50% (v/v) ethanol solution: Mix 50 mL anhydrous ethanol with 50 mL water.
3.2.6 1.0 mol/L NaOH solution: Prepared according to GB/T 601, no calibration required.
3.3 Standards/Reference Materials
Seven standards of benzoic acid, benzenedicarboxylic acids, and benzenetricarboxylic acids (see Annex A) with purity ≥ 99%, or certified reference materials with national certification.
3.4 Standard Solution Preparation
3.4.1 Stock Standard Solutions
3.4.1.1 Terephthalic acid stock solution (500 mg/L): Accurately weigh 50 mg (precision: 0.1 mg) terephthalic acid into a stoppered conical flask, add 1 mL 1.0 mol/L NaOH solution, ultrasonically dissolve, dilute with a small amount of acetonitrile solution (1+1), transfer to a 100 mL volumetric flask, and dilute to volume with acetonitrile solution (1+1). Store in the dark at 4 ℃ ~ 10 ℃ for 6 months.
3.4.1.2 Single-component stock solutions for other standards (1000 mg/L): Accurately weigh 100 mg (precision: 0.1 mg) of each standard into stoppered conical flasks, add 1 mL 1.0 mol/L NaOH solution, ultrasonically dissolve, dilute with a small amount of acetonitrile solution (1+1), transfer to 100 mL volumetric flasks, and dilute to volume with acetonitrile solution (1+1). Store in the dark at 4 ℃ ~ 10 ℃ for 6 months.
3.4.2 Mixed Standard Intermediate Solution A
Pipette 24 mL terephthalic acid stock solution (500 mg/L) and 1.0 mL trimesic acid stock solution (1000 mg/L) into a 200 mL volumetric flask; add 12 mL of each of the other five single-component stock solutions (1000 mg/L). Dilute to volume with acetonitrile and mix well.
