本标准规定了金属覆盖层厚度的一种测量方法。该方法是首先在覆盖层表面和基体金属表面之间形成一个台阶，然后应用轮廓记录仪测量台阶的高度。本标准具体规定了仪器的特性以及轮廓仪法的特殊测量规程。本方法适用于测量平表面上厚度0.0l/μm～1 000/μm的金属覆盖层厚度，如果采取适当措施，也可以测量圆柱表面。它非常适合于微小厚度的测量，但对厚度小于0．01μm的工作表面平直度、平滑度的要求非常严格，因此建议不要在电子触针式仪器的最低厚度范围内采用本标准。本方法适用于制备覆盖层厚度标准片厚度的测量。
