Hotrolled wide steel strips for oil and natural gas transmission pipelines
1 Scope
This document specifies the classification and designation representation, ordering information, manufacturing process, technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, marking and quality certificate for hotrolled wide steel strips for oil and natural gas transmission pipelines.
This document applies to hotrolled wide steel strips and sheared steel plates (hereinafter referred to as “steel plates and strips”) with a thickness not greater than 25.4 mm for oil and natural gas transmission pipelines. Steel plates and strips for other fluid transmission welded pipes may refer to this document.
2 Normative References

3 Terms and Definitions
No terms and definitions are defined in this document.
4 Classification and Designation Representation
4.1 Classification
4.1.1 By quality level:
a) Quality Level 1 (PSL1);
b) Quality Level 2 (PSL2).
4.1.2 By transmission medium after pipe manufacturing:
a) Steel plates and strips for natural gas transmission pipelines;
b) Steel plates and strips for oil transmission pipelines.
4.1.3 By product application:
a) Conventional steel plates and strips;
b) Sour service steel plates and strips.
4.1.4 By delivery condition:
a) Hotrolled (R);
b) Normalised rolled (N);
c) Thermomechanically rolled (M).
4.1.5 By edge condition:
a) Trimmed edge (EC);
b) Untrimmed edge (EM).
4.2 Designation Representation
4.2.1 The designation for conventional steels consists of the capital letter “L” (the initial letter of “Line”), the specified minimum total extension strength, and the letter code representing the delivery condition (applicable only to PSL2 quality level).
Example: L415M.
L — Represents the capital initial letter of “Line”;
415 — Represents the specified minimum total extension strength, in megapascals (MPa);
M — Represents the delivery condition of thermomechanically rolled.
4.2.2 In addition to the nomenclature in 4.2.1, other common designations are given in Table 1. These designations consist of “X” (representing pipeline steel), the specified minimum total extension strength, and the letter code representing the delivery condition (applicable only to PSL2 quality level). Steel Grades A and B do not include the specified minimum total extension strength.
Example: X60M.
X — Represents pipeline steel;
60 — Represents the specified minimum total extension strength, in kilopounds per square inch (ksi);
M — Represents the delivery condition of thermomechanically rolled.
4.2.3 For sour service steel plates and strips, the capital letter “S” (the initial letter of “Sour”) is added after the designation specified in 4.2.1 and 4.2.2, e.g., L415MS/X60MS.
4.2.4 The application, quality level, delivery condition and designation of steel plates and strips are given in Table 1. A comparison table of the designations in this document with those in relevant domestic and international standards is given in Annex A.
5 Ordering Information
5.1 A contract or order placed according to this document shall include at least the following information:
a) The number of this document;
b) Quality level;
c) Designation;
d) Dimensions, shape and tolerances;
e) Delivery condition;
f) Mass;
g) Product type (strip or sheared plate);
h) Edge condition;
i) Specimen orientation for tensile, bend, impact, dropweight tear, hydrogeninduced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress corrosion (SSC) tests;
j) Transmission medium;
k) Application;
