本标准为数据处理设备之间高性能、点对点的有效单工接口提供了机械、电气及信号协议的规范。本标准所描述的接口可以按800Mbit/s或1600Mbit/s的峰值数据速率进行操作，采用铜缆距离可超过25m。即使在传输距离超过HIPP-PH的规定的情况下，与距离无关的信号协议也允许平均数据速率接近峰值数据速率。本标准的目的是，通过在物理层和数据成帧层处提供一个公共接口，以便计算机系统的开发和应用。该接口在不同的计算机、高性能显示系统以及高性能智能化块传送外围设备之间提供了有效的互连。该接口针对较大规模的块传送进行了优化。
