短期天气预报是预报员应用气象观测资料，根据大气运动规律，对未来７２ｈ内天气变化进行预测，制作成预报结论，并向社会公开发布或在服务对象范围内发布，为社会活动、经济建设、人民生活、防灾减灾和国防建设等提供的保障服务。随着经济、社会快速发展，短期天气预报显得更为重要，而短期天气预报至今没有全国统一的标准，为了更好地规范短期天气预报业务，制定本标准十分紧迫和必要。 本标准规定了短期天气预报的术语和定义、预报内容、预报时效、预报制作和发布等内容。
本标准适用于短期天气预报制作、发布和使用。
