本方法是利用空气透过性原理来测定金属及其化合物粉末的外表面积以及与其相关的平均等效
球粒径（范围0.5μｍ～50μｍ）。粉末可在“供应态”下测试，或经试验室按照ASTM B859的规定对粉末进行分散或研磨处理后测试。所测得的数值不一定完全反映粉末的实际状况，但作为粉末质量控制是十分有用的。
