This part is applicable to guidance of the correct use of emergency shower and eyewash equipment. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB/T 38144.1 Eye and face protection—Emergency shower and eyewash equipment—Part 1: Technical requirements 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 38144.1 and the following apply. For the convenience of application, some terms and definitions in GB/T 38144.1 are listed repeatedly as follows. 3.1 emergency shower equipment for whole body shower in case of emergency [GB/T 38144.1-2019, 3.1] 3.2 eyewash equipment used to wash eyes [GB/T 38144.1-2019, 3.2]   3.3 eye/face wash equipment for washing eyes and face at the same time [GB/T 38144.1-2019, 3.3] 3.4 combination units units consisting of an emergency shower, an eyewash or an eye/face wash [GB/T 38144.1-2019, 3.8] 3.5 freeze protection measures to protect the flushing fluid in emergency shower and eyewash equipment from freezing, failure to work. Note: Freeze protection includes mechanical valve protection and electric heat tracing protection. 4 Selection 4.1 Basic principles 4.1.1 Selection should be made according to the use place and environment. 4.1.2 Fixed emergency shower and eyewash equipment should be selected in areas with fixed water system. Self-contained emergency equipment should be selected in areas subjected to site environment or water source restriction. 4.1.3 In highly hazardous areas, it is suggested that personal wash units should be properly equipped in addition to emergency shower and eyewash equipment. 4.2 Specific conditions 4.2.1 In view of the risk of secondary injury to users due to the high temperature of flushing fluid, the emergency shower and eyewash equipment with high temperature protection devices (such as self-drain device for keeping flushing fluid not inside the equipment in non-working state, or heat protection valve) should be used in areas where ambient temperature is higher than 38°C, alternatively, the equipment should be subjected to proper cooling and heat preservation. 4.2.2 In view of the possibility of freezing of flushing fluid, the emergency shower and eyewash equipment with freeze protection (such as self-drain device and freeze protection valve) should be used, or the equipment should be subjected to proper heat preservation. 4.2.3 In view of the possibility of long-term freezing of flushing fluid, the emergency shower and eyewash equipment with freeze protection (e.g., electric heat tracing preservation) should be used, or the equipment should be subjected to proper heat tracing preservation. Note: Regardless of freeze protection measures, the most important thing is that the temperature of flushing fluid in the equipment shall not exceed 38 °C. It is prohibited to use the equipment to replace inherent special protective devices, for example, wearing individual protection equipment, such as eye protection, facial protection and protective clothing to resist the impact of solid particles or splash of harmful liquids.
