Determination of migratable chromium (VI) in toy materials - Ion chromatography WARNING - Persons using this document shall be familiar with normal laboratory practice. It is the responsibility of the user to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to ensure compliance with any national regulatory conditions. 1 Scope This document specifies the method for determining the content of migratable chromium (VI) [Cr(VI)] in toy materials using ion chromatography. This document is applicable to the following accessible toy materials: ——Category I: dry, fragile, powdery or flexible toy materials; ——Category II: liquid or sticky toy materials; ——Category III: scrapable toy materials. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB/T 6682 Water for analytical laboratory use - Specification and test methods EN 71-3 Safety of toys - Part 3: Migration of certain elements 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in EN 71-3 apply. 4 Principle Migratable chromium [Cr(VI)] is dissolved matter Cr(VI) extracted from toy materials by simulating the continuous contact between toy materials and gastric acid for a period of time after swallowing. In this document, Cr(VI) will produce a purple-red complex after being separated by anion exchange column and mixed with the post-column derivant under certain pH conditions, which is determined by UV-Vis detector and quantified by external standard method.
