1 Scope This document gives guidelines for the use of terms, definitions, abbreviations and acronyms for communication between vehicles and external equipment for emission-related diagnostics; the process for constructing new terms is specified. As this document gives the recommended usage of diagnostic terms applicable to electrical/electronic systems, relevant mechanical terms, definitions, abbreviations and acronyms have been referenced in the preparation of this document. This document applies to all light-duty gasoline and diesel passenger cars, cargo vehicles, and heavy-duty gasoline vehicles. Specific applications of this document include diagnostic, service and repair manuals, bulletins and updates, training manuals, maintenance databases, under-the-hood emission labels and emission certification applications. Interpretation of terms, abbreviations or acronyms not contained in this document is also permitted. This document is intended to assist the industry by providing standard terms, definitions, abbreviations, and acronyms with the goal of establishing common terminology for diagnostic tools and publications. This document references SAE J1930-DA, which includes all standard terms, definitions, abbreviations, and acronyms. 2 Normative reference documents The contents of the following documents constitute essential provisions of this document through the normative references in the text. Among them, note the date of the reference document, only the date of the corresponding version applies to this document; do not note the date of the reference document, its latest version (including all the change orders) applies to this document. ISO 15031-5 Road vehicles: Communication between vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diagnostics Part 5: Emission-related diagnostic services (Road vehicles-Communication between vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diag-nostics-Part 5: Emissions-related diagnostic services) ISO 15031-6 Road vehicles: Communication between vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diagnostics-Part 6: Definition of diagnostic fault codes (Road vehicles-Communication between vehicle and external equipment for emissions-related diag-nostics-Part 6 ; Diagnostic trouble code definitions) SAE J1930-DA J1930Electrical/Electronic Systems Diagnostic Terms, Definitions, Abbreviations, and Acronyms Web ToolSpread (J1930Electrical/Electronic Systems Diagnostic Terms, Definitions, Abbreviations, and Acronyms Web ToolSpreadsheet) 3 Terminology and definitions The terms and definitions defined in ISO 15031-5 and ISO 15031-6 are applicable to this document. 4 General Information For manufacturers and technical personnel to understand some common terms, may not strictly comply with the requirements of this document, including the following three categories of terms. 5 Document Overview Figure 1 shows the reference documents. The protocol initialization identifies whether ISO 15765-4 DoCAN or SAEJ1850 or ISO 14230-4 DoKLine or ISO9141-2 is the supported data link layer for the vehicle. ISO 15031-5 specifies the available emission-related diagnostic services. This document specifies the data record structure and references SAE J1930-DA, SAE J1979-DA and SAE J2012-DA which contain all emission-related OBD data definitions. 6 Naming Rules 6.1 Naming objects 6.1.1 General information This methodology for describing objects and systems uses modifiers attached to the base vocabulary. Appropriate modifiers are added to the base vocabulary until an object or system has a specific definition in the context. When creating a name, select the most appropriate descriptive base vocabulary from the table of entries (see SAE J1930-DA). Add appropriate modifiers or arrange the text in order from most important to least important within the text. The most important text will be used as the base vocabulary to represent the basic function of the object. The most important modifier is closest to the base vocabulary, the second most important modifier is next, and so on, until all modifiers have been added. For later explanatory purposes, an additional modifier may be added if needed, even if there is no apparent conflict with an existing object name. Table 2 shows how to add a modifier when creating a name for the "Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor for Instrument Display". When naming an object, it is easy to choose the first modifier based on the initial purpose of the object being designed, but in the long run, this may not always result in the most useful name for the service technician. The information that technicians need is a description of the functional properties rather than a description of the purpose. Refer to Table 2 for naming methods that use modifiers attached to the base vocabulary to describe objects and systems. Bibliography
