This document is applicable to synthetic staple fibres. It can be used as reference for other fibres such as composite staple fibres. 2 Normative references The following documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. GB/T 4146 (all parts) Textiles - Man-made fibers GB/T 6529 Textiles - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing GB/T 9994 Conventional moisture regains of textile materials GB/T 14334 Sampling method for man-made staple fibres 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 4146 (all parts) apply. 4 Principle The fibres are treated with dry hot air under specified conditions. Based on the length change of fibres before and after treatment in dry hot air, the shrinkage in hot air is calculated to characterize the thermal stability of the fibres. 5 Apparatus 5.1 Single fibre thermal shrinkage tester: Accurate to 0.01mm for length measurement. 5.2 Specimen tube. 5.3 Forceps or curved-tip forceps. 5.4 Tension clip or spring clip. 5.5 Clearer plate with a color in contrast with that of fibres. 5.6 Electric blast drying oven: Able to blast air from its side with power that shall not be less than 1.0kW, at a temperature with an allowable error of ±1℃. 5.7 Electronic scale: With an accuracy of not less than 0.1g. 6 Test preparation 6.1 Sampling Take laboratory samples as specified in GB/T 14334. 6.2 Standard atmosphere for conditioning and testing In accordance with GB/T 6529. 6.3 Conditioning of specimen Take approximately 5g of fibres randomly from laboratory samples and condition them under standard atmospheric conditions until equilibrium is reached. Otherwise, measure the conventional moisture regain (standard moisture regain if no conventional moisture regain is available) of the fibres according to GB/T 9994, and condition the fibres according to the conditioning time recommended in Table 1.
