Hardmetals — Vickers hardness test method
1 Scope
This document describes the test method for Vickers hardness of hardmetals at room temperature and high temperatures.
This document applies to the determination of Vickers hardness of hardmetals at room temperature and high temperatures. The determination of Vickers hardness of cermets at room temperature and high temperatures may refer to this document.
2 Normative References
The following documents are essential for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition (including any amendments) applies.

3 Terms and Definitions
No terms and definitions are defined in this document.
4 Symbol Representation Rules
Vickers hardness is represented by the symbol HV, with the hardness value preceding HV and the test force following HV, expressed in kilogramforce (kgf). The test temperature point is indicated in parentheses ( ); for room temperature Vickers hardness, the test temperature need not be indicated.
Example 1:
900HV30 indicates a Vickers hardness value of 900 measured at room temperature with a test force of 294.2 N (30 kgf).
Example 2:
900HV10 (800 °C) indicates a Vickers hardness value of 900 measured at 800 °C with a test force of 98.07 N (10 kgf).
NOTE: The conversion factor from kilogramforce to newton is gₙ, where gₙ = 9.806 65.
5 Principle
A diamond indenter in the form of a regular square pyramid with a specified angle between opposite faces is pressed into the surface of the test specimen with a specified test force. After maintaining the force for a specified dwell time, the test force is removed, and the diagonal length of the indentation left on the specimen surface is measured. The Vickers hardness value is proportional to the quotient of the test force divided by the surface area of the indentation, which is treated as having the ideal shape of a square base and the same angle as the indenter. A schematic diagram of the test principle is shown in Figure 1. A schematic diagram of the Vickers hardness indentation is shown in Figure 1a), and a schematic diagram of the indenter is shown in Figure 1b).
