Bubble leak testing – Vacuum hood method
B.1 General
The bubble leak testing – vacuum hood method is a technique suitable for detecting leaks in pressure components that cannot be pressurised directly. The method involves applying a bubbleforming solution to a local area of the pressure component shell and then creating a pressure differential in that local area using a vacuum hood. If a leak occurs, bubbles will be generated on the lowpressure side, thereby enabling the leak location to be determined.
B.2 Scope
This testing method is a coarse leak method with low sensitivity requirements. It is generally used only to determine whether a test object leaks, without quantitative analysis.
B.3 General requirements
B.3.1 General
The general requirements for this testing method shall comply with the relevant provisions of NB/T 47013.1 and this document, and in addition with the provisions of B.3.2 to B.3.5.
B.3.2 Procedure specification
B.3.2.1 Essential factors include the following:
a)Bubbleforming solution (grade or model number);
b) Surface temperature (the minimum temperature of the test object during testing shall comply with the relevant provisions of pressure testing; the maximum or minimum temperature during testing shall be consistent with the testing method);
c) Surface condition;
d) Lighting conditions;
e) Personnel skill requirements (when necessary).
B.3.2.2 General factors include the following:
a)Vacuum pump;
b) Vacuum hood (size and shape);
c) Vacuum holding time;
d) Vacuum test pressure;
e) Pressure gauge;
f) Postcleaning method;
g) Acceptance criteria;
h) Personnel qualification.
