YS/T 951-2014 Method of the ultrasonic testing for rails
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, testing principles, testing methods, personnel requirements, testing requirements, test pieces and sample rails, probes, instruments and equipment, signal‑to‑noise ratio, stability, operation, result determination and marking, etc. for ultrasonic testing of rails.
This standard is applicable to ultrasonic testing of symmetric cross-section rails and asymmetric cross-section rails for railway with a mass of 37kg/m to 75kg/m. It may serve as a reference for the ultrasonic testing of other rails.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in GB/T 12604.1 and the following apply.
3.1
center of rail base
any point on the longitudinal axis of symmetry on the surface of the rail base
3.2
stability
magnitude of actual sensitivity variation during the rail testing process
3.3
stability indices
limits given to stability during the rail testing process
3.4
benchmark echo height
reference height used to determine the relative height of various echoes, generally expressed as a percentage of the full scale, and the range of the benchmark echo height is 50% to 80% of the full scale
3.5
modified value of sensitivity
difference in sensitivity caused by material and surface conditions between the special comparative test piece and the static sample piece or the dynamic sample rail
