本标准规定了通用成帧规程（GFP）的帧格式、客户信号到GFP的映射过程，GFP的互通、性能和管理。
本标准定义了GFP的两种客户信号适配方式：一种是成帧映射GFP（GFP-F）,它把一个完整的信号帧封装到一个GFP帧后再传送，适用于基于分组数据单元PDU的客户信号（如IP/PPP、以太网MAC）；另一种是透明映射GFP（GFP-T）, 它把客户字节信号解码后封装到一个固定长度的GFP帧再传送，适用于基于块编码的连续比特流客户信号（如FC、ESCON/SBCON等）。
本标准适用于通用成帧规程（GFP）。
