Flame-retardant and fire-resistant wires and cables, including halogen-containing, halogen-free, low-smoke ones, have been produced and used for more than ten years in China and are of far reaching importance to fire safety. However, on account of lack of international standards and national standards, the products are in chaos in terms of name, model, technical requirements, test methods etc., some of which are also inconsistent with international requirements. This standard is formulated to unify domestic manufacturing and application and meets the requirements of international trade and economic & technical interchange.
Provided that almost all electrical wires and cables are required to be flame-retardant and fire-resistant, in general, the materials adopted need to be changed instead of the structure of wires and cables to achieve this goal. Therefore, this standard is formulated instead of formulation of product standards one by one, in which combustion characteristics requirements (flame retardance and fire resistance etc.) different from current common product standards are specified, available flame-retardant or fire-resistant materials are recommended, and corresponding marks are added before common product models to make distinction from common products.
In this standard, test methods and performance requirements for relevant halogen free, low smoke, flame retardance and fire resistance characteristics are all in accordance with latest editions of the following international standards:
IEC 60331: 1999 Tests for Electric Cables under Fire Conditions - Circuit Integrity
IEC 60332: 2000 Tests on Electric and Optical Fibre Cables under Fire Conditions
IEC 60754: 1997 Tests on Gases Evolved during Combustion of Electrical Cables
IEC 61034: 1997 Determination of Smoke Density for Combustion of Electrical Cables under Specified Conditions
This standard may be used as product standard directly. In case the standards for single-series products are required to be prepared, relevant contents must be in accordance with those specified in this standard.
Appendixes A, B and C of this standard are informative.
This standard is a national standard formulated for the first time.
This standard is proposed by China Electrical Equipment Industrial Association.
This standard is under the jurisdiction of National Technical Committee on Wire and Cables of Standardization Administration of China.

3 Terms and Definitions
3.1
Flame retardance
The characteristic that flame spreads on the sample within limited scope and extinguishes by itself in case the sample is burned under specified test condition and the fire source is removed, i.e. the capacity to retard occurrence or spreading of the flame.
3.2
Fire resistance
The capacity to keep continuous operation under specified state in case of being burned under specified fire source and time, i.e. the capacity to maintain integrity of the line.
3.3
Halogen free
Free from halogen, relatively low corrosivity of combustion products.
3.4
Low smoke
Less smoke dust generated in case of being burned, namely relatively high light transmittance (visibility).
4 Models
4.1 Composition of model
The models of flame retardant and fire resistant wires and cables are composed of two parts: codes for combustion characteristics of products and models of relevant wires and cables, see Figure 1.
