Laboratory environmental test methods for military material - Part 11: Salt fog test
1 Scope
This part specifies the purpose and application, tailoring guidelines, information requirements, test requirements, test process and result analysis of salt fog test carried out in military materiel laboratory.
This part is applicable to salt fog test of military materiel.
2 Normative references
The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part. For dated reference, subsequent amendments (excluding corrections), or revisions, of any of these publications do not apply to this part. However parties to agreements based on this part are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. GJB 150.1A-2009 Laboratory environmental test methods for military materiel - Part 1: General requirements
GJB 4239 General requirements for materiel environmental engineering
3 Purpose and application
3.1 Purpose
This test is intended to:
a) determine the effectiveness of protective layer and decorative layer of materials;
b) determine the influence of salt sediments on the physical and electrical properties of materiel.
3.2 Application
This test is applicable to:
a) evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of protective coating and decorative layer of materiel and its materials, determination of potential problem areas, and detection of quality control defects and design defects;
b) materials optimization and materiel evaluation;
c) materiel mainly exposed to the atmosphere with high salt content.
3.3 Restriction
This test:
a) does not reproduce the influence of marine atmospheric environment, because the chemical composition and concentration of marine and other corrosive environments are different from those specified in this test;
b) cannot explain that there is a direct relationship between salt fog corrosion and corrosion caused by other media;
c) cannot prove that the materiel that has withstood this test can withstand corrosion in all corrosive environments;
d) has been proved that it is often unreliable to predict the service life of different materials and coatings;
e) cannot replace the evaluation of corrosion caused by damp heat and fungus;
f) is prevented to replace the test of components with the test of samples or test pieces.
4 Calculation guidelines
4.1 Selection of test methods
4.1.1 General
The requirements of relevant technical documents are analyzed and the results obtained from implementing GJB 4239 in the procuring process of materiel (product) are applied to determine the materiel life stage when atmospheric corrosion environment appears. Whether this test is necessary shall be determined according to the following environmental effects. When it is necessary to carry out this test through determination and the same test piece is used for this test and other environmental tests, the sequence of this test and other tests shall also be determined.
4.1.2 Environmental effects
4.1.2.1 Corrosion effect
Salt fog environment may cause the following corrosion effects on the materiel (product):
a) corrosion caused by electrochemical reaction;
b) accelerating stress corrosion;
c) formation of acidic or alkaline solution due to salt ionization in water.
4.1.2.2 Electrical effect
Salt fog environment may cause the following electrical effects on the materiel (product):
a) damage to electrical equipment caused by salt sediments;
b) generation of a conductive coating;
c) corrosion of insulating materials and metals.
4.1.2.3 Physical effect
Salt fog environment may cause the following physical effects on the materiel (product):
a) blocking or jamming of the moving parts of mechanical parts and components;
b) blistering of the coating due to electrolysis.
4.1.3 Selection of test sequence
4.1.3.1 General requirements
See GJB 150.1A-2009, 3.6.
4.1.3.2 Special requirements
In most cases, it is recommended to carry out salt fog test after other tests if the same test piece is used to complete various climate tests. Salt sediments may interfere with the effectiveness of other tests. Generally, the same test piece is not used for salt fog, fungus and damp heat tests, but if necessary, salt fog test shall be carried out after fungus and damp heat tests. In addition, the same test piece is generally not used for sand and dust test and salt fog test, but if necessary, sand and dust test shall be carried out after salt fog test.
4.2 Selection of test procedures
There is only one procedure in this test.
4.3 Determination of test conditions
4.3.1 General
After this test and corresponding procedure are selected, the test conditions and test technology used in such procedure shall also be selected according to the requirements of relevant documents and the information provided for such procedure. Test parameters such as concentration and pH value of salt solution, test duration, salt fog sedimentation rate, test temperature, etc., and technical status of test pieces shall be determined, and the contents of 4.3.2 to 4.3.7 shall be considered when determining these parameters.
