This Part of GB/T 10001 specifies the common graphical symbols for public information used in information carriers and their application principle. Public information graphical symbols are divided into those with the square side length greater than 10mm (referred to as graphical symbols) and those from 3mm to 10mm (referred to as small graphical symbols).

Graphical symbols specified in this Part are applicable to the public places and relevant facilities, specifically to the design of the guiding elements, such as the position signs, guide signs, information boards and sketch map in the public information guidance system.

Small graphical symbols specified in this Part are applicable to portable printed matters (e.g. guidance map, tourist guide, manual) and to information carriers like the equipment operation panel.
