1 Scope This Standard specifies a method of converting room temperature percentage elongations after fracture obtained on various gauge lengths to other gauge lengths, includes conversion formula and conversion factor table of percentage elongation and figures of this type of conversion. This Standard is applicable to austenitic stainless steels within the tensile strength range 450 to 750MPa, gauge length not exceeds 25 , the flakiness ratio not exceeds 20, and in the solution treated condition. This Standard is not applicable to cold rolled steels, quenched and tempered steels, and non-austenitic steels. In the case of strip under 3mm thickness, as the index, n, in the Formula (1) given in this Standard increases with decreasing thickness; the percentage elongation to be used shall be the subject of agreement between the customer and the supplier. The conversion method this Standard is worldwide used, conversion by which is reliable within the scope of this Standard. However, there are many factors have influence on the determination of percentage elongation, so whether the conversion method specified to be used shall be the subject of relevant standards or agreement. In the case of dispute or arbitration, percentage elongation shall be determined according to relevant standards or agreement. 2 Normative References The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this standard. At the time of publication, all the editions indicated are valid. All standards are subject to revision, parties to agreements based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the latest editions of the normative documents indicated below. GB/T 228-1987 Metallic Materials — Tensile Testing GB/T 8170-1987 Rules for Rounding Off of Numberical Values 3 Definitions For the purpose of this document, the following definitions apply. 3.1 gauge length of test piece: the length of the parallel portion of the test piece used for measurement in the process of elongation test. The gauge length prior to the test is named as original gauge length, and the gauge length after the test is named as post-fracture gauge length.
