GB 18078 Health protection zone for agricultural and sideline food processing industry comprises two parts:
——Part 1: Slaughter, meat-processing industry;
——Part 2: Grain grinding and feed-processing industry.
This is Part 1 of GB 18078.
This part is developed in accordance with the rules given in GB/T 1.1-2009.
This part replaces GB 18078-2000 Health protection zone standard for meatworks.
The following main changes have been made with respect to GB 18078-2000:
——the standard name is adjusted and the standard structure is adjusted in accordance with GB/T 1.1-2009 Directives for standardization - Part 1: Structure and drafting of standards;
——the definition of “health protection zone” is revised and two terms and definitions, i.e., “sensitive area” and “complicated landform”, are added;
——the standard limit of health protection zone is revised, the wind speed classification and production scale classification are adjusted;
——the requirements for greening are added.
This standard was proposed by and is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Health (MOH) of the People's Republic of China.
The previous edition of standard replaced by this part is as follows:

1 Scope
This part of GB 18078 specifies the required health protection zone between slaughter and meat processing and production enterprises and sensitive areas.
This part is applicable to the construction, renovation and expansion of slaughter and meat processing and production enterprises located in plain areas. This standard may also be referred to for existing slaughter and meat processing and production enterprises.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
health protection zone
the minimum zone from the boundary of departments (workshop or workplace) where harmful factors are generated to that of sensitive area
3.2
sensitive area
areas which are relatively sensitive to atmospheric pollution, including residential areas, schools and hospitals
3.3
complicated landform
mountains, hills, coastlands, etc.

4.2 The determination method of health protection zone for slaughter and meat processing and production enterprises located in complicated landform shall be in accordance with the requirements of Sub-clause 7.6 of GB/T 3840-1991.
4.3 For locations of slaughter and meat processing and production enterprises and sensitive areas, the influence of wind direction/frequency, landform and other factors shall be taken into consideration to minimize their pollution to the atmospheric environment in sensitive areas.
4.4 The enterprises that plant dense arbor plants as green belts (with a width of not less than 10m) within the range of health protection zone may be subject to 90% the standard limit of health protection zone. Attention shall be paid to the selection of tree species that are resistant to or can absorb specific pollutants.
