Volume I Road Traffic Signs
3 General
3.1 The road traffic signs are the facilities used to regulate the traffic by sending specific information to the traffic participators in form of symbols, color and characters.
3.2 The form, pattern, size, installation, construction, reflection, illumination and fabrication of road traffic signs must be in accordance with those specified in this standard.
3.3 The color scope of road traffic signs shall be implemented in accordance with the relevant provisions of GB/T 8416, see Appendix A (normative).
3.4 The characters on road traffic signs shall be written properly, correctly and neatly. Chinese characters and other characters may be used as required. Where both the Chinese and English characters are used on the sign, the place name shall be expressed in the Chinese phonetic alphabet and the specific terms shall be expressed in English.
3.5 The outer edge of the frame of road traffic sign shall have bottom color. The bottom color are specified as: yellow for warning signs, white for prohibition signs, blue for mandatory signs, green for guide signs on expressways and urban expressways and blue for guide signs on other roads.
4 Classification of Traffic Signs
Traffic signs are classified into two main classes: main signs and auxiliary signs.
4.1 Main signs
4.1.1 Warning sign: The sign used to warn the vehicles and pedestrians noticing the dangerous sites.
4.1.2 Prohibition sign: The sign used to prohibit or restrict the traffic behaviors of vehicles and pedestrians.
4.1.3 Mandatory sign: The sign used to direct the traveling of vehicles and pedestrians.
4.1.4 Guide sign: The sign used to send to the information on road direction, place and distance.
4.1.5 Tourist zone sign: The sign used to provide the direction and distance of tourist attractions.
4.1.6 Road construction safety sign: The sign used to inform the passing through road construction area.
4.2 Auxiliary sign:
The sign set under the main sign for the purpose of supplementary description.
5 Warning Signs
5.1 The color of warning signs is yellow bottom, black edge and black pattern.
5.2 The form of warning sign is equilateral triangle, with the vertex angle upward.
5.3 The size codes of warning signs are as shown in Figure 1. The minimum values of their side length and width shall be selected in accordance with Table 1 based on the road design speed.

Width of black edge B, cm 9 8 6.5 5
Corner radius of black edge R, cm 6 5 4 3
Width of lining bottom edge C, cm 1.0 0.8 0.6 0.4
5.4 The distance from the warning sign to dangerous site shall be selected in accordance with Table 2 based on the road design speed.

Distance from sign to dangerous site, m 200~250 100~200 50~100 20~50
5.5 Kind and installation site of warning sign
5.5.1 Intersection signs (see Warning 1, Warning 2, Warning 3, Warning 4, Warning 5 and Warning 6)
Intersection signs are used to warn the vehicle drivers to slow down and to avoid intersecting with the transversally coming vehicles. They shall be installed at proper position in the driving-in section of such level intersection with bad visibility.
Warning 1 Right-angled Intersection Warning 2 T Intersection Warning 3 T Intersection
Warning 4 T Intersection Warning 5 Y Intersection Warning 6 Rotary Intersection
5.5.2 Sharp Turn Signs
Sharp left turn (right) sign (see Warning 7 and Warning 8). They are used to warn the vehicle drivers to slow down. They shall be installed outside the starting point of the curve as required that the design speed is less than 60km/h, the radius of horizontal curve is equal to or less than ordinary minimum radius specified in technical standard of road and the stopping sight distance is less than the specified sight distance, however, they shall not be installed in the adjacent circular curve.
Warning 7 Sharp Left Turn Warning 8 Sharp Right Turn
5.5.3 Reverse Turn Sign (see Warning 9)
It is used to warn the vehicle drivers to slow down. It shall be installed outside the starting points of the two reverse curve sections of which the design speed is less than 60km/h, both the radius values of two adjacent reverse horizontal curves are less than or one of the radius values is less than the ordinary minimum radius specified in the technical standard of road and the distance between circular curves is equal to or less than the specified shortest length of transition curve or superelevation transition section, however, it shall not installed in the adjacent circular curves.
