Upholstered Furniture - Assessment of Burning Behavior of Mattress
1 Scope
This standard specifies the terms and definitions, requirements, testing equipment, inspection methods and inspection rules of upholstered furniture mattress.
This standard is applicable to mattress as well as mattress and foundation used in various places.
This standard is not applicable to water bed and air bed without insulator between inlet material and mattress core.

3 Terms and Definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
insulator
gasket material between shell fabric and elastic material or other core material, including foam plastic, plastic net, fiber felt (cloth), palm fiber pad, chemical fiber (cotton) felt, shredded coconut pad and the like
3.2
mattress
upholstered bedding that is made of elastic material, shell fabric or elastic material, insulator and shell fabric and can be used alone or together with other products
Note: There are mattress for adult, teenager or infant; bunk bed mattress; futon; mattress for sofa or sofa bed on which you can lie down to sleep directly or by adjusting backrest or handrail; movable sofa bed mattress; corner combination mattress; daybed mattress; folding bed mattress; pulldown bed mattress; mother and child mattress and the like.
3.3
foundation
structure covered by upholstered material, used for supporting mattress or sleeping bunk and used together with mattress
Note: This structure is composed of framework, foam, box spring or other materials.
4 Requirements
Under open fire, the burning behavior of product specified in this standard shall meet the following requirements simultaneously:
a) Within 30min after ignition, the peak of tested heat release is less than or equal to 200kW;
b) Within 10min after ignition, the total heat release is less than or equal to 15MJ.
5 Testing Equipment
5.1 Composition
Test equipment mainly include heat measuring equipment, testing chamber, collection and smoke exhaust system (smoke collecting cover, smoke exhaust pipe and fan), testing base, ignition source and the like.
5.2 Heat measuring equipment
Heat measuring equipment shall determine heat release rate based on oxygen consumption principle. The data acquisition system of heat measuring equipment can collect and record data such as oxygen concentration, carbon monoxide concentration, carbon dioxide concentration, heat release rate and total heat release; the time of each data collection and data processing shall not exceed 5s. Heat measuring equipment shall at least be calibrated at two points, i.e. 75kW and 200kW in heat release power.
5.3 Testing chamber
Testing chamber can be open space or closed space. At testing area, the temperature shall be kept between 15℃ and 27℃ and relative humidity shall be less than 75%.
The dimension of closed testing chamber and the arrangement of relevant equipment are given in Figure 1; smoke collecting cover shall be arranged at the smoke outlet outside the testing chamber. Reference testing chamber is (3 660±25)mm long, (3 050±25)mm wide and (2 438±25)mm high. The testing chamber shall be free from other openings except a (2 032±6)mm-long and (965±6)mm-wide window for placing video recorder. Moreover, the testing chamber shall have wooded or metal support post as well as fire wall board or calcium silicate board.
See Figure 2 for open testing chamber. Smoke collecting cover shall be arranged right below the position for placing specimen.
Smoke collecting cover is used for collecting smoke. The area around specimen shall be large enough and all adjacent materials and objects shall not have secondary thermal radiation influence on specimen. The airflow at each side of specimen shall be in uniform rate.
During testing, the airflow from testing chamber and blowing towards all specimen directions shall be ensured in uniform state.
Fire-fighting equipment shall be provided in testing chamber.
