1 Scope This standard specifies the general requirements for the radiography of steel and steel castings by means of X-rays or gamma-rays, in accordance with procedures given in GB/T 19803 and GB/T 19943. This standard is applicable to radiographic testing of steel castings casted in all kinds of method. 2 Normative References The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. All the subsequent Change Notifications (excluding corrigendum) and revised versions are not applicable. All parties reaching agreement according to this standard are encouraged to study whether to use the latest editions of these documents. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document applies. GB/T 19803, Non-destructive testing — Image quality indicator of radiographs— Principle and identification (GB/T 19803—2005; ISO 1027: 1983, IDT) GB/T 19943, Non-destructive testing — Radiographic testing of metallic materials by X-rays and gamma-rays— Basic rules (GB/T 19943—2005; ISO 5579: 1998, IDT) ASTM E446, Standard reference radiographs for steel castings up to 2 in. (51 mm) in thickness ASTM E186, Standard reference radiographs for heavy-walled (2 to 4 1/2 in. [51 to 114 mm]) steel castings ASTM E280, Standard reference radiographs for heavy-walled (4 1/2 to 12 in. [114 to 305 mm]) steel castings ASTM E192, Standard reference radiographs for investment steel castings of aerospace applications 3 Ordering Instructions 3.1 The request for radiographic testing and all pertinent information relating thereto, such as sensitivity, coverage and acceptance criteria, shall be indicated in the enquiry and order. 3.2 Unless otherwise specified in the enquiry and order, the radiographic coverage may be of two types, i.e. pilot or regular production testing. For both types, the manufacturing plan shall show the area to be examined and the frequency of examination, and shall be subject to agreement between the supplier and purchaser. 3.3 If requirements are imposed for which there is not an accepted national standard or other standard available, a detailed specification of such requirements shall be provided. 4 Testing Time 4.1 Unless otherwise specified in enquiry and order, radiographic testing may be carried out any time in the manufacturing process before or after thermal treatment. 4.2 If necessary, the surface of the steel casting shall be cleaned so as not to cover and mix up discontinuity caused by surface imperfection or superfluity. 4.3 Any image quality indicator could be used as long as to reach the sensitivity designated by the purchaser.
